People in government seem more interested in money, which won't save them from potential extinction.

Brazil recently abolished a large nature reserve in the Para and Amapa Amazonian region states, opening them up to mining activities.

Opposition politician Randolfe Rodrigues called it "the biggest crime against the Amazon forest since the 1970s."

^^^ I heard the reason was that the church itself was also partly flooded, making it impractical to use for shelter at first.

In Houston in particular, massive suburban sprawl (particularly in Katy, west of H-town) and piss poor land use policies have really screwed up drainage quality. The city has no zoning, and the sprawl has created a whole crapload of impervious cover. (http://www.nemo.udel.edu/manual/Chap2Web.pdf)

Austin and San Antonio have done a reasonable job at addressing IC, because of proximity to the Edwards Aquifer.

Osteen did eventually open up the church.

He is but one of a large number of "prosperity" pastors found in many countries throughout the world.

However, to be fair in this, non of the photos in the linked article show whether or not the church was flooded to any degree. it just shows an old image of the church interior.

My country is home to one of the most active and compassionate relief organizations: Gift of the Givers, which is headed by a Muslim (Su'fi). They help in all countries affected by war or natural disaster irrespective of religion or politics. From their website:

This is how we should be all be, rather than ask what a person's beliefs are, or what their bank balance is, before lifting a finger.
