Depressed and Confused
Today, me, my dad and my sister were driving to church and I was reading a magazine about anime and he was acting upset
so I asked him what was wrong and he told me that I was getting too obsessed with Japan and the Japanese culture, which is slightly contradictary due to the fact he himself is a full-blooded Japanese person. He told me I was romanticizing too much over Japan, I mean, I know I was talking a little too much about it with him earlier on in this year. I told him he didn't have to worry about me going there anytime soon (at least not until I'm around 60, at which time I plan to immigrate there). He responded by telling me that he did'nt know if Japan would be around by then, or that it may be destroyed. I then proceeded to tell him I wouldn't talk about it with him anymore, then he told me I was over reacting. When we got to church I spent about ten minutes outside the church crying
. I know I have AS and that it causes me to be a little too obsessed about certain subjects but I have been condemned my whole life for my obsessions and I am getting tired of that. I wish I knew what to do from here. NEED HELP!! !! !
Did something bad happen to your father in Japan.Sometimes parents react very illogically based on information that are afraid to share with us.Would your dad except your interest in Japanese culture if you read some of it's "less that flattering history"?(America has it's share of unflattering history)No country or culture is perfect. That doesnt mean we cant appriciate the things about it that we like.I dont think it is unusual to want to understand a culture that is part of your own heritage. You dont have to be AS to feel that way.I think it is sad that your father doesnt want to share this with you but he may have a reason that he is not ready to share with you right now(often parents assume that we arnt mature enough to hear things that are negative!! !)Perhaps when your dad is in a good mood, relaxed and with some free time...you can ask him about what he was referring to specifically about Japan's negative side?

My dad has never been to Japan, his family immigrated here in 1907. He is a third generation Japanese-American. So that removes the idea that he has a negative idea based on past experiences in Japan or that he understands "negative" aspects of Japan or Japanese culture.
He doesn't act like he understands AS, accepts the fact that I have it, or understands the severity of it in me, saying, "You have it, but not really that bad". I know that I have "problems" that I can't help, but those "problems" have gotten me in trouble with
more people than I can name, among others my parents, teachers and the Special Ed System. They just don't think it is acceptable for me to be "different", which I define as "unique". After having to deal with their reactions to my "problems", my limited ability to pursue my interests (due to financial and transportation limitations), and family problems (my mom divorcing and breaking up the family, and my aunt trying to drill religion into my head), I just can't wait to go to college. However, I didn't prepare to go to college or take the right classes (needed Geometry), so now I have to go to the local community college for one semester before enrolling at another 4-year college 120 miles away in Missoula, MT. Compounding the problem, I don't even have a driver's license yet, but I am going to try and get one next spring, hopefully, if I don't fail the exam or get in a crash. I guess I am just feeling desperate be independent, so I can finally after 18.5 years of hell, be free of all the difficulties of family life and obtain the ability to pursue my obsession with Japan, Anime/Manga, and video games. I just need some support and maybe advice.
