This is a fictional creature made up as a joke, probably to mess with tourists. I just find the idea of a deadly Koala Bear hilarious.

Billy Connolly's take on this is hilarious. Kind of in the same vein as "Who first discovered we could get milk from cows, and what did he think he was doing at the time?"
