Does the NCAA have the guts for this?
With March Madness on in earnest, here's an interesting story:
NCAA fouls on graduation rate commitment
A proposal was recently floated by the US Secretary of Education such that university mens' basketball teams that do not graduate at least 40% of their incoming high school classes should be disqualified from March Madness.
But does the NCAA have the guts to risk banning schools like Kentucky (31% overall graduation rate) or Maryland [U of Maryland--Baltimore] from the national championship tournament?
Should NCAA teams be disqualified over low graduation rates?
Do they have the guts? Nope.
Also, I think anything based on graduation rate would be unfair unless only counts players who stay for all four years. Otherwise it would be penalizing programs for recruiting players with NBA-level talent.
