I love museums and exhibitions. The most interesting and controversial one I've been to so far was The Bodies Exhibit. It displayed plastinated human bodies and body parts. According to the people in charge of it, the bodies were unclaimed and from China. Unfortunately, I later found out that they may actually be the bodies of executed Chinese prisoners and that the methods of obtaining them were questionable. At least this was back when I was naive about China's human rights violations.

There is also a local museum that I occasionally visit. It's main focus is my city's history, and entering it is free of charge. It has a wooden boat full of colorful blown glass that I could stare at for hours.

I have visited many museums and enjoy them. The possible issues referred to in the original post would not have to be for every museum. Museums help educate the people who visit them. They help preserve artifacts which might otherwise be lost to the public now and in the future. If museums were suddenly eliminated, those artifacts would be available only to one person (the owner) and those few he chose to share them with.

I do agree that many of the artifacts should be returned to their original owners (native people or country) but I would hope that they would choose to display them in their own museums. There have been instances of museums returning artifacts (including artwork) but I don't know how common this is.

That's creepy - I live close to there. :V

I used to think museums were boring, but recently I have been wanting to go to OMSI or the Portland Art Museum just for the hell of it.

I love museums as I love learning about the evolution of the world and man.

There is a traveling museum that is nearby that I want to go see before it moves on. It's called Bodies: The Exhibition. It's very controversial (if you haven't heard of it, you can look it up on a search engine) but I would love to see it. Perhaps it's because I'm majoring in Registered Nursing. Whatever the reason, I think it's a pretty neat idea.

I remember my ex mentioning this one a few times as she said it was very interesting!

Can anyone recommend any particularly good web sites associated with museums?

I really like museums, especially the science one in Manchester.
2 years ago I went to the "body worlds" exhibit, I really enjoyed that one. My favourite part of that was the foetuses growing from embryo all the way to almost newborn, I know they were real but it didn't creep me out at all. That one wasn't the "bodies: the exhibition", which was mentioned earlier in the thread. In the one I saw these people had already signed an agreement to let their bodies be used for science when they died, and the families of the deceased would have agreed to it too. I'd go there again if they were doing an exhibition in a nearby museum.

I love museums. They're quiet and always leave me inspired. I understand why they need to charge us, to keep the exhibited objects intact. :) I am also aware of the fact, that many of the objects are stolen, but hey - if it hadn't been stolen I would probably never have seen it.
