What's the best present you ever got out of your stocking? When do you open them? Before the presents under the tree, after them, or even Christmas Eve?

As for me, first thing Christmas morning. Sometimes before my parents are even awake! :)

I'd have to say money, as I did not get an allowance. Christmas, birthday and report card rewards were critical. In addition, every year my stocking held ribbon candy, more a visual than a taste treat, really, and navel oranges which my grandparents sent from Florida before we left the frozen North. I was allowed into the stocking on Christmas Eve.

When I hang stockings these days, sad to say, they're just for show.

A handbag, perfumes, pretty sweater (fluffy, garish red, red beads around the neck - one of my prettiest ones), stamp album and, when I was young, Barbie doll and jeans skirt. These are the Christmas things I was ever most glad of. Ah, and a diary when I was 10. Ah, and a small handbag I got at 4 - I still have it, it's yellow with dark brown numerous small dots on - I enjoyed this present so much for a handbag is something for an adult, teen at least, not a kid I was; it made me feel more adult to have it.

In Poland we don't have the tradition of Christmas stockings, presents are just put under the Christmas tree. I read about the stockings for the first time (though I had seen them on TV before) in "What Katy Did" at 11.

Diamond Earrings was the best present I have found in my Christmas stocking.

As a mother, I loved to wrap little presents and put them in my childrens Christmas stockings. I would put some presents in there which weren't wrapped, usually the cheaper things like Hot Wheels and Match Box Cars and small boxes of Legos and Little dolls and very small stuffed animals and candy.

I've heard some people only get fruit and nuts in their Christmas stocking. I had a friend who got that in her stocking every year. I use to feel bad for her. I think that's an old tradition, putting fruits and nuts in the stockings, probably started in a time when those things were considered luxuries.

Ok, heres the way christmas runs in our house:
The night before, we get to open one present and go to bed.
My parents stay awake all night, downstairs/in their room assembling the presents (or until 4/5 in the morning).
My sisters stay up until 1, and get tired.
My brother goes(went) to bed on time because he got tired early.
I would(will 1 more time) stay up in my room until 4 in the morning, when our parents put out our stockings.
I quietly check out my goods, and put them neatly in, and sleep for another hour or two.
My sisters wake up around 6, open theirs in their room, and so does(did) my brother.
We show each other about 30 min. later what we got, and maybe exchange candies...maybe.
Then another 30 min. passes by, and we wake up our parents.
My dad video tapes us "opening" our stockings, and displaying the contents. (because all of us eventually re-stock our stockings).
And our parents tell us to get ready to go downstairs for presents...
That is the stocking part of christmas, I will not explain our whole christmas to you.

The best thing that I ever got in my stocking was a stopwatch, which I used to train for my half-marathon later on, and for track also.

I pulled a Beatles cassette out of my stocking, one year. 8)
