They have no experience and neither do I but they do know how to ski. How fast can this be learned? Also I have a bit of a lower back pain, should I skip it then? I don't want to get hurt anymore than I am now.

Also do I really need a bonnet and a scarf, I don't have either at home?

It took me 3-4 days to pick up the basics and be able to reliably get down easy/intermediate runs without busting myself up. I had a skiing background, but the people I know who didn't picked it up in about the same amount of time.

You'll fall down a lot the first couple days. If it's icy you'll be banged up for sure (my 2nd day was wild icy and I was bruised to hell the next day), but if there's fresh snow, falling down doesn't really do any damage.

They're only going for 1 day so I'm guessing they won't be able to learn it at that time. Is skiing easier?

I don't snowboard or ski, nor do I surf. But knowing what I've been told by others who do one or all of those things, snow boarding is closer to surfing than skiing. I would recommend going, and planning a day to just goof around, and if you do wind up getting some skills, it's a bonus. The back pain is definitely a thing to watch... I'd recommend taking it very carefully!

Skiing is easier to keep from crashing, but it takes way longer to actually get good at.
