The old people apartments across the main road where my mother lives had an explosion last night. The second building over from her had a husband and wife, on oxygen but who still smoked after turning the valve off but not going outside (nobody knew about that until later although they had asked if that was ok to do when they got the oxygen) apparantly didn't turn the valve off all the way last night. It blew up at about 2am. Blew the roof off their apartment and started a fire. Killed both of them. Fire dept came, all that. That's terrible, and I feel bad for their families but this is what I don't understand.
My mother lives not even 100 yards away from that building. When I spend the night over there because she's having chest pain or leg pain or doesn't feel well, I can get up in the middle of the night, tiptoe into the kitchen to get a coke out of the fridge, two whole rooms away from her as quiet as I can be and I hear "FRANCES?? IS THAT YOU??" I haven't made any noise but opening the fridge. I can go to the bathroom and not turn the light on, tiptoeing, and she hears me peeing through two shut doors and calls to me. She is a very light sleeper.
She did not wake up when the apartment blew up. My daughters bf heard it over here, across the street and up about two blocks. It was so loud he thought it was something in the yard. I called her this morning when I got back from taking the kids to school because I saw the fire truck, hole in the roof of the other apartment, etc. She couldn't see it from her place and had no idea that anything had happened. She slept through an explosion, she slept through fire trucks, ambulances and cop cars. She slept through it all. If I spend the night over there again, she best not be fussing at me for having the tv on something like 12 volume (normal volume for that tv is 30).
I thought that was odd. I could see me sleeping through it, or everybody here sleeping through it. If my daughters bf wasn't awake he wouldn't have woke up. Nobody here woke up and he said it was loud. But a light sleeper, right next to it??
