Samuel Adams (1722)
Samuel Adams was an American Revolutionary leader and patriot. In the mid-1760s, he drafted protests against Great Britain's Stamp and Townshend Acts and authored pamphlets designed to stir up sentiment against the British. Adams helped organize the revolutionary Sons of Liberty, was the chief instigator of the Boston Tea Party, served on the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.

Miguel de Cervantes (1547)
Cervantes was a Spanish author best known for Don Quixote de la Mancha, his novel about an aging knight. A superb burlesque of the popular romances of chivalry, the work was an enormous success and has had an indelible effect on the development of the European novel. Cervantes himself led an eventful life; he was imprisoned several times, captured by pirates, and sold as a slave.

Of course, he made beer.

I don't know how many people drink his beer nowadays. I think it's very rare.

Ultima Online (1997)
Ultima Online was not the first massively multi-player online role playing game (MMPORG). It revolutionized the gaming industry, which had previously been limited to fixed software media loaded onto a PC's hard drive and used locally. By contrast, MMPORGs can be played by thousands of subscribing players online in real time, transcending national boundaries, through various game servers or "shards."

Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi (1207)
Rumi was a great Persian poet and Sufi mystic. His Masnavi-ye Manavi is a 6-volume poem regarded by many Sufis as second in importance only to the Qur'an; it is often called "Qur'an-e Farsi" (The Qur'an in Persian). Rumi's influence spread to Persian-speakers in Afghanistan and central Asia, and beyond, to Turkey and India. His followers founded the Mawlawiyya (Mevlevi) order, whose members use dancing and music as part of their spiritual method.

Wrong, Meridian 59 was the first.

People's Republic of China (1949)
Mao Zedong's proclamation came after half a century of conflict: the fall of the last Chinese emperor, the Japanese invasion, World War II, and a civil war between communist and nationalist forces. The second half of the 20th century was no more peaceful as the new government attempted to rebuild and unify the country under communism's strict guidelines.

Mohandas Gandhi (1869)
Gandhi is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century for managing to secure India's independence from British rule through non-violent civil disobedience. His methods have inspired many later civil rights leaders throughout the world, most notably Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela. In 1948, Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic angered by Gandhi's solicitude for the Muslims.

Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954)
Stevie Ray Vaughan was an American blues guitar legend, known as one of the most influential electric blues musicians in history. His unique style was based partly on the use of heavy strings and has been likened to the styles of Jimi Hendrix and Albert King. Vaughan helped reshape what has come to be known as the Texas Blues sound. His career was cut tragically short when he died in a helicopter crash in 1990.
