Males who learn ballet
When I was in high school I fell in love with ballet. I'm not sure how I was initially exposed to it, though. Maybe I accidentally tripped over a book on it in the public library. Anyway, I really convinced myself I was going to be a professional ballet dancer. I started practicing plies and positions.
Yes. My family thought it was superbly odd of me, but I didn't care. And this was smack in the middle of a black neighborhood, too. It wasn't a ghetto but the sentiments were there. Anyway, I realized I couldn't afford to study ballet in a troupe somewhere and I became crestfallen.
During my junior year, someone mentioned something about gymnastics and how it may be technically related to ballet. I'd never even heard of gymnastics so I checked it out in school. It was love at first sight.
I joined the team and focused on the parallel bars. I wished then I'd known about it and started back in 9th grade. By 11th grade I would've been a contender. I wasn't good enough to pursue it on a collegiate level so that was the end of that dream.
I joined a dance troupe in college, but after a few weeks, I stopped. I guess the drive had left.
