How many here play chess? And at what level do you play?

I've played since I was about 11. I was very good, but I stopped playing for 5 years. Does this place have a chess thread?

I used to love Chess when I was younger. I learned how to play when I was ~ 6, by watching my brother and dad play. I loved the movement patterns of each piece, particularly the knight. Pretty quickly, I was beating my older brother (and he no longer wanted to play). I remember playing in our school's 4th grade chess tournament. I was playing against some kid. I looked away for a second and when I looked back, I saw him move a piece. He cheated. Of course, I told on him and he denied it. He ended up beating me. I came in 2nd. I was so disappointed (not in losing, but how I lost). I lost interest in the game.

I play chess but don't often have the time. A few years ago I wrote a chess program too and it usually beats me on the highest setting! Beaten by my own creation!

I'm terrible at chess. I pretty much just wing it, the same as with most video games.

I used to. I learned how to play it from reading a book.

I'm terrible at chess. I can't seem to be able to plan ahead my moves while at the same time keeping in mind the moves that my opponent will make. My science teacher tried hard to teach me, but it was a lost cause. It's a pitty because I really want to play because of the mental challenge it involves. But it seems like I just don't have the part of the brain that can play chess. Oh well...

I played chess a lot, but not so much now.

My class did a tournament, and I beat everyone, except the local genius, but I knew I had made one mistake, so I attempted to make it a draw, but failed. :P If you can't win, they can't either!

I don't play chess. I know the 'moves' of the pieces but there is NO way for me to plan the moves to really play the game. I can just move stuff around until I end up losing.

I can play backgammon though. I have certain moves I take depending on the dice and what the other person does (or computer opponent - at it always is)

Also cross, Risk, Stratego or ANY game requiring you to have a plan instead of just moving based on the roll of dice, etc.

I'm a girl and I am almost 53. I have NEVER been able to play a video game, and I'm talking as far back as the PONG days (look it up if you don't know what that is!)

Jumping, shooting, all the fancy video stuff they have now, I AM CLUELESS and have no ability to use my hands on a controller to play a game.

I love a good game of chess! I haven't played for a long time though and would be very rusty. I tend to play too rigidly though and if you know set plays well you will probably consistently beat me after awhile.

That's one of the first ever games I ever programmed back on a Sinclair ZX81 computer. Just for my own amusement and programming practice.

I was learning when I was a teen in the state hospital.I was playing one of the staff,a real ass hole.He kept gobbling up my pawns,I figured out how to stop him.then he got over confident and I checked him,he was pissed,a couple other staff members thought it was hilarious. His face turned real red.He did win eventually.I've never played it since.I'd have to learn all over.
