My first surfing attempts were when I was staying at my aunt's beach shack at a beach not far away from where I live now.
I found an old surfboard under the house and carried it (quite a distance) down to the beach.
I think I was around twelve or thirteen.
Anyway, I basically taught myself.
Only the board was damaged and started taking on water.
Have no idea what it was made of.
It was sinking lower and lower under the surface, and by the end it was about a foot under.
Had to drag the blasted thing all the way back to my aunt's because I couldn't lift it.

lol, at lest you were persistent :)
When i started stand up, i used to have to carry a popup up a very steep hill.. My father helped for a while then one day he decided he didn't want to help anymore. So told me if i wanted to surf to carry it myself... He occasionally got slack from other parents as he walked on ahead while i was sweating like a pig trying to carry a brick on my own up this long steep hill...
But wasn't going to let his ignorance to get in the way of one of the few enjoyable things i had at the time.
