The country I'm assuming we're talking about is the United States *of* America, and not one of the two continents, North and South America. I never refer to the US as America, I absolutely hate it. But I have no problem calling people who live in the states Americans. Calling them United Stations would just sound weird.

dog eat dog society... a nation divided by nearly its population. to be fair, x divided by approximately x is approximately one, so it seems aptly misconstrued in being united.
