Yep....English does have irregular pronunciations. But languages like Welsh and Gaelic REALLY have eccentric pronunciations which hardly correspond with how a word is spelled.
To be fair, English borrows a number of its words from other languages.

^Sympathy isn't the same thing as compassion. Sympathy is empathizing too much with someone. Compassion is showing someone decent kindness and love.

^I sympathize so much with people that I absorb their emotions and feel their pain. For instance, when I was writing a part of my book the other day, in which the main character has scars on her back that are peeling and breaking and opening, my back started to hurt.
