http://www.cracked.com/article_15767_th ... ve-us.html

The worst part is that it's a well-researched and accurate article, especially for being on what is usually a comedy site. I've studied this stuff. 8O

Some people have some 'splainin to do. Seriously.

It's indeed true Porsche built parts of the Tiger tank. They produced the turret. They were going to produce the whole thing, but in the end Henschel made the chassis.

This is a model of the Tiger that was put into production; it has the Henschel chassis and the Porsche turret

And this is a model of the Tiger that was 100% made by Porsche.

Porsche used that chassis for the Ferdinand self-proplled gun.

and yes military vehicles are one of my special interests...

Y'know, I was just thinking about the Volkswagen's connection to Nazis the other day.

In the '90s Michael Moore (who was cooler and funnier then) did a TV expose in which he and a small pack of Holocaust survivors went in to BMW headquarters and demanded private compensatory payments (at that time, BMW was the only German car company that had not paid or apologized to its former slave laborers). Just before the segment aired, thousands of reparation checks were in the mail. That's how you make a corporation do the right thing: threaten them with a PR nightmare.

Luckily for them they haven their public image to worry about.

I learned from a (somewhat unreliable) source that BMW and Mercedes would manufacture airplane engines for the nazis and that their logos were inspired by propellers. I'm not sure on this information's veracity though. Could be just another conspiracy theory.

It's pretty much a given that any manufacturing entity that existed in Nazi German or it's allies did something to contribute to the war effort and were typically guilty of utilizing slave labor if it was availed to them. Many concentration camps were built in very close proximity to major factories. Either that or new factories were built adjacent to the bigger camps.
Not just manufacturing but also mining and raw materials, textiles, and construction work utilized slave labor.

Also, the controversy mentioned in the article over using the use of the name "Zyklon" in modern marketing is really a non-issue. The German word "zyklon" translates to "cyclone" which is innocent enough. Just because the pesticide that the Nazi’s used for mass extermination was called "Zyklon B" does not make the word "cyclone" in itself evil. To make an issue over that is really grasping at straws.

If you're a German company that helped with the Zyklon-B thing, like, a lot, it would be a good idea for both PR and one's soul to not use the name Zyklon, ever. If only out of respecting the dead. It's unsettling for the same reason a southern town choosing the name Lynchendale is.

The BMW propeller meaning is a new one that they gave to their logo, but the origin is another, which I forgot =P
