Mainstream porn sexualizes cruelty
I finally found a great short article on this topic, and wanted to raise it again.
One reason I care is because I have a four year old Aspie daughter. I doubt we'll have moved to Aspie planet by the time she's grown, and letting her grow up in a culture that thinks cruelty to women is sexy is just not acceptable.

If someone can tell me how to make that web address magically blue and active, I'd sure appreciate it.
This is a short article by Robert Jensen, professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

I just wanted to quote a few of his main points:
BEGIN QUOTE
We live in a culture in which rape and battery continue at epidemic levels. And in this culture, men are masturbating to orgasm in front of television and computer screens that present them sex with increasing levels of callousness and cruelty toward women. And no one seems to be terribly concerned about this.
Some segments of the feminist movement, particularly the high-theory crowd in academic life, want us to believe that the growing acceptance of pornography is a sign of expanding sexual equality and freedom. Meanwhile, feminist critics of pornography have been marginalized in political and intellectual arenas. And all the while, the pornographers are trudging off to the bank with bags of money.
No matter how hard it may be to face the reality of a rape culture, at least the culture still brands rape as a crime. Pornography, however, is not only widely accepted but sold to us as liberation.
It is true that the connection between mass-media exposure and human behavior is complex and not well understood. Social scientists, like most experts, argue both sides. I think the evidence clearly shows that in some cases pornography influences men’s sexual behavior. But whatever one’s view on that, this fact is not in question: Lots of men -- including professors, bankers, and judges -- pay money to watch those images and masturbate to orgasm watching those images. And they aren’t simply images of sex. Often they are images of men being sexually cruel toward women.
If you are a woman, ask this: Do you want to seek out such a man as a partner?
If you are a man, ask this: When seeking a woman as a partner, would you advertise that you enjoy these images?
Why not?
I am not suggesting all men use pornography, or that all men who use pornography want material in which women are hurt and humiliated, or that all men who use pornography are bound to then want to hurt and humiliate women. I am simply saying that much of the pornography in the United States records scenes of women being hurt and humiliated; that men masturbate to orgasm to those images; and that those men are not deviants but are acting on the cultural norms that are widely taught. And I am suggesting that these facts should matter to us; they should scare us.

Thanks for reading this.
That is a gross fact of life I guess. If you still don't get it, watch HBO's tv show "Real Sex" especially the Takes segments where people are asked and commet on various things about sex. It's an earopenerand eyeopener.
Also another HBO show called "Taxicab Confessons" and a gay guy said about a sex act that's done in clubs and you need surgery to close the wound after it's done. That was so gross!
Some people even want Sex advertised like a KOA billboard on the highway! Pray and hope that doesn't happen. Well maybe in Boulder if it hasn't allready happened.
We've been "progressing" toward this for a long time. "Non-violent" pornography is only a shade less damaging, honestly. And the average prime time TV series is only a shade less ugly than that. I only hope and pray I can raise my child (and hypothetical future children) to respect the inherent dignity of their fellow human beings and to treat others with love.

Wish this subject was outside of the
women's section. I have some musings
on the matter. You might want to consider
reposting a copy in the adult section.
I started a new thread in the "Adult" area:

I have other links and a whole lot of thoughts on this. Be prepared.
Jewelie, do please come and post your link! I hadn't seen yours before and it's gone into my favorite places!! ! Thank you.
Here's what you teach your daughter: Act like she is open minded, get the guy to admit his darkest thoughts and dump the ones who admit it. Teach her to be objective about dating and not emotional. She can let that happen after she actually gets to know them. It's either that or get her five brothers and move to a small town so they know everything about every guy who asks her out. That does effectively take care of those problems.
As to objectifying and abusing women, it's been around since "civilization" at least. Women were viewed as property and abused as such for thousands of years. Porn is just allowing those men to fantasize that it is still like that. That's it. It isn't mind control, it's already there. If you don't think that then you haven't been around when they talk to each other and think you can't hear. That is the true wake up call. Just do that a few times and all of your illusions will be gone for good.

I'm confused about the "If you still don't get it" part, because it sounds like you're saying, this is the way it is, get used to it. But then your last comment on praying and hoping makes me think something else. I'm definitely not going to get used to it. Seems akin to telling Jews to get used to the concentration camps, and I know that's not what you mean. I haven't subscribed to cable TV since the late 1980's, so I guess I'm living under a rock in that respect.
Anyway, thanks for your comments.

I'm not very competent at this link posting stuff, but I will try.
Thanks for your comments, but the be prepared one makes me hesitate, as I am pretty easily upset!

Er, and why? We all have dark thoughts, men and women. Just because we have these thoughts doesn't mean we're going to carry them out on your brood or anyone else's. So the siege mentality is not helpful.
