I need to get a haircut, for the last few weeks actually. But, I can't stand going to the barber! Its so overwhelming. The noises, being touched, the close personal proximitie, etc.

What do I do?

A short few years ago, I started braving the barber. Some asian male immigrant barbers were OK and some cut it strange (but I was able to communicate how wrong it was so that they'd fix it). The non-immigrant females usually did a good job and were understanding. One time I went back to one but she wasn't there. Instead, my hair was cut by some guy, while another guy ridiculed my communication techniques. I tried a different place and the person there was a female asian immigrant who just didn't do a very good job. After telling my mom these things, she doesn't mind giving me my haircuts. I have no problem getting her to fix anything she might have missed so, it really works out great for me. So, unless you're as fortunate as I am, go find either an immigrant male or non-immigrant female to cut your hair.

I hate getting my hair cut. I hate the forced conversation, the lengthy cutting and measuring, and the heat and noise of the blow dryer, all of it. I only get my hair cut every year or two. I'm a girl though, so I can get away with it. I let my hair grow long, and then I cut a lot of it at once (although that brings its own problems as I actually hate when my hair changes in length like that). Last time I had 17 inches taken off at once (about a year and a half ago).

Good luck braving the experience.

Find a place and a barber with whom you're comfortable. I was with one barber for five years, following him several places. Then I cut my own hair for the next five years. Now I'm with my uncle's barber, who has cut his hair for almost 30 years and knows most of the people in my family.

Good to read this discussion. You all are able to put into words what my son struggles with when having to get his hair cut. It has taken nearly four years, but he puts up with me doing it. Not sure what the barber shop experience will be like. Once I took him to Walmart and it was a screaming nightmare for him. Never again unless he is interested.

If you're a guy, why not get a set of clippers with attachments and cut your own? The attachments prevent the hair from getting cut too short, and with a little practice you could give yourself a decent short cut.

The person that cuts my hair I know quite well. But she did a bit of an awful job on my last haircut but I couldn't tell her. Next time I'm bringing in a picture of how I want it cut.

yep, I just did this about an hour ago! I'm always hesitant to cut it myself because I've butchered my hair before! But I'm happy right now because I did a good job, plus not anxious anymore about having to go to the barber! Yay!

Sounds like other people have a hard time getting their hair cut like I do, is this a common experience with AS people?

You are brave to go back after she did an awful job. But if you show her a picture, i'm sure it'll be more how you want. You are lucky to have someone you know who cuts your hair.

Exactly, that's what I did. Those attachments are great. You can shave the back of your head by yourself with no problems.
I started doing it because they never got my hair right. D:
So now all I have to do is pop into the bathroom for a couple minutes. I even cut my bangs at a different rate than the rest of my hair. XD So much freedom~

I let mine grow out long and then I shave it myself when I can't stand it anymore

Cut your own hair or have someone you know cut your hair? Do you know anyone who can cut your hair?

I can't stand people touching my head, so I cannot tolerate getting a haircut. If I cut it short with clippers, it's all fuzzy and people want to touch it, so I ended up just never cutting my hair at all. It's waist length. I keep it in a braid and hide it down the back of my shirt.
