special interest: Asperger's
Autism is not my special interest, it's a normal interest. I am a lot more knowledgeable, know more studies, know the criteria better, know more traits that are associated with it, know better how to interpret some autistic behaviour and know very well of the unfamiliar diversity of the spectrum that means my and everyone's knowledge of autism is ultimately very small - basically, yes, I a certain that I know more than many many professionals. I've been told to write articles or talk about autism before, but I don't know what to talk about. I mean, it's just an interest.

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. Terry Pratchett
One of my biggest special interests, the one I hope to make into my career someday, is the biochemistry of neuropsychiatric disorders. Specifically, bipolar I mania, Asperger's, and OCD (which I also have) are my key areas of interest. Within each disorder, I have an intense focus on a specific symptom. For AS, it's the special interests themselves. So, I have a special interest about special interests.
There are so few neuroscience studies about the brain chemistry of special interests. That is very sad, in my opinion. I find special interests fascinating. I love talking about mine, of course, but I also love meeting other Aspies and hearing what their special interests are. That is why I joined this site. I find it so interesting how person "X" can be obsessed with one thing, but person "Y" is obsessed with something totally different. I mean, what about a subject/topic sparks a special interest? Why is one thing just something we like, but another is something that we literally cannot stop thinking/talking about? When I find people to talk about AS with, I really only focus on the special interests in the conversation, because, to me, that is the coolest and most beneficial part of AS.
