I'll have to try the sugar packet thing next time I'm at a restaurant. I like holding the package by one (short) end and shaking it (what people do to get the sugar down).

One way I stim is by playing with things I hold. I play with almost everything I hold/

I'm glad people appreciate this, it's great to know what you all do with your hands...interesting reading. Don't think I'll be taking up pipe-smoking though! I am a "lady" afterall ;P

I don't care about what you do for a hobby, but telling people this is misleading.

Although pipe smoking is the safest form of smoking, it does not come without health risks. It bring an increased risk of various forms of cancer, as well as heart attack and stroke. Even though you may not directly inhale the smoke, it makes contact with the inside of your mouth, and you inhale some of the secondary smoke.

Sorry, I won't mind my own business when people spread misinformation that can negatively affect others. I wouldn't have said anything if you hadn't made an effort to convince others that pipe smoking has no health risks. Like I said, I don't care what you do for a hobby.

I'm surprised my reply elicited such a response. I guess it's because you are now aware of the health risks your precious hobby brings, and you are feeling guilty about it? Well, that's your problem. That's a risk of sharing things with others.

I love to tear up napkins while I'm in resturaunts. I'll rip them until they wont rip any further. My parents wouldn't let me do that at home lol they would always say I made too much of a mess, they didn't even like me doing it in resturants.

I write and type a lot, probably to the point of compulsion.

I need to pet my cats.

Stims for me are often mental. Card games (looking at the graphic of the card, animating it in my mind, considering strategies to use it in a deck, etc), video games, puzzles (sudoku, cryptoquote). As far as something physical, not too sure. I know I used to enjoy the seam of ceartain clothes or sheets (rubbing between fingers and whatnot).

I always have to be doing something with my hands, I have broken many things because of that. Funny thing is when I was reading this I just realised I was running the edge of a 2p coin up and down my hands lol, I like doing that, scratching things up and down my hands.

Playing with little pebbles I pick up throughout the day. I'm bad for forgetting they're there, and end up with a dozen smooth pebbles in the dryer/washer. I just love touching the texture of them. I actually enjoy sitting on cold pebbly tile for the same reasons. My parents though I was strange/defiant for never sitting on the furniture when guests were over.

One of my most frequent stims is the finger rubbing 'money' guesture thing with nothing between them. I peel my finger skin too though

melting crayons on the heating element in the basement. It would drip on my fingers and I would eat it off, fascinated for hours.

i remember finding out about this in the old hallway that connected my childhood school to the church. my mother would go to bingo there on monday nights and take me with her, and i would play out in the hallway, which was long and dark with high ceilings and rubberized floor runners, and there was a radiator every so often. we had no radiators in our home so they fascinated me. i had crayons with me and held one to the hot metal and watched it melt, and was transfixed. i would take bottlecaps (the old-school kind with the serrated edging) and melt the wax into the bottlecap and create my own "crayons" by mixing colors and then popping them out of the mold. i also experimented on setting my mom's hot pink bingo chips on top of the steam element and watching them melt. i felt like i was doing something terribly dangerous and taboo. i would love to go back there and see if there's still wax on those radiator, so i could say meee meee, i did that, thirtysomething years ago

I rip up napkins in restaurants and play with anything squishy. I also love putting glue on my fingers and peeling it off.

Any time I eat rice I take a pinch of it and squish it over and over until it forms a little ball, and then continue to squish it until it falls apart.

I have two main kinds of stims I do, neither of which catch negative attention from outsiders:

#1: I do drumming and "bongo playing" to songs I hear in my head (this is OK with outsiders because I am a professional musician and can claim I am just working out an arrangement)

#2: I "touch" letters or words on posters and billboards with my "mind hands" and only I can "see" this touching

I have others which I catch myself doing subconsciously: like rubbing a finger under my chin or on my forearm as if in contemplation; I also deliberately pace a bit if upset, but these last three are more rare.

Try this stim tip: a rubber band. It can be stretched, or my favorite, balling it up and rolling it between the palms. One handed fidgeting is also possible. It is quiet, portable, barely noticeable, harmless to one's health, and works. I used to be tempted to make a loud clap with my hands (when anxious) but this replaces that potentially embarrassing one.
