I've been going through a really hard time after loosing my pet, and have been visiting a forum for dealing with pet grief. I've posted a couple of threads in that forum, and every time people always respond with things like "I'm so sorry sweety, because you're young it's a lot harder to cope with death" or something along those lines. I'm 23! I feel so silly because I know that I come off as very immature and childish sometimes. I have a hard time dealing with my emotions and at the moment am so frustrated with how I act sometimes. When my bunny died, I was there with him and all I could do was scream. I didn't stay with him during his last moments, instead I ran to get my fiance because I couldn't handle it. I feel so ashamed, I wish I could handle my emotions better.

Anyway, this mostly happens on forums and the internet. Someone accused me of being a troll once on a dog training forum because they didn't think that I was as old as I said I was. Quite embarrassing.

It may make you feel better to know that people who lack basic emotions are most likely jealous that you can feel so strongly.

I'm sorry about your bunny. My cat (my best friend for nearly 14 years) had to be put to sleep recently and it was awful.

People usually think I am a teenager IRL but that is mainly because I look young. I am actually 22. I feel like I'm about 13 in my head usually. I definitely don't feel as old as I am.

Yes. People always think I am younger then I actually am, physically and emotionally. I also get very attached to my dogs and cats, and when they die it is very hard, had a rabbit too at one time, he was so cute, following me everywhere :(

Don't feel bad - lots of people mistake me for a child as well, especially in real life. Also, I don't think it's childish to grieve over the loss of a pet. My mom is in her 50s and when we had to put the dog to sleep 2 years ago, she was so heartbroken that she declared that she'd never own any more animals (after the cat we still have dies) because she doesn't want to deal with the grief when they die.

So sorry about your rabbit. We have a cat but my choice would have been a rabbit or a guinea pig. I don't know that I'd be able to handle living with any other animals though, just because of the life expectancy part.

Even though I'm getting silver hair right on the top of my head, people still think I'm at least 10 years younger. On the phone, my voice tends to get high and squeaky (cos I do not like the phone). Today someone from work called and thought it was my 12 year old daughter answering. I don't really like being treated younger than I am, but I'm not good at pretending to be more mature. Not much I can do about that.

wow. i can relate to being treated as younger than i am. my daughter is 11 and people are always telling me i'm not old enough to have a daughter that age as if i'm making it up. when she was a baby people always looked at me weird when i told them she was MY baby not my sister and i wasn't babysitting. i have a very young sounding voice too. i can't get into bars or buy alcohol/smokes even with id sometimes they think it's fake.

i know how hard it can be to lose someone or something you love. 23 is still fairly young and if you haven't dealt with death much then of course it will be much more difficult to lose a pet then an older person who has lost more loved ones in the past. i have never had a pet die on me other than fish, which made me feel sick to my stomach. i did lose my boyfriend of six years/my daughters father several years ago though and i'm still not completely over it although i have moved on. i think it would be even more difficult losing your pet if you have trouble with social skills because your pet would mean that much more to you. it takes time to process these things in a healthy way. there's nothing wrong with what you are going through.

I do not mind being mistaken for much younger than I am. Sometimes it annoys me but people treating me like a child is in a way a lot easier. On the internet I have people thinking I'm much older than I am, however, than younger.

Currently my mental state is that of a 6 year old. So yeah, people treat me like a child.
