I wander how it is to live as an Aspie in America. After owning a car a for almost a month, I have 3 people that I would usually bump into on my journey, I may never see them again. There is work then home then work again. I went again to my Salsa classes in a wine bar at the town centre but instead there was a rock band guarded by polish bouncer. What next.

America is a car driven society, one where people can end up living in isolation. This article pretrays Americans living in isolation. I am wondering if this would make Aspie Americans even lonelier like many of the NTs do, or does it make life easier because lonely NTs are more willing to reach out to Aspies more then ones who are not lonely.

Hmmmm being a hermit by choice right now, car culture is personally advantagous because it lets me afford my own place
in a cheaper area away from town.

Am I more isolated than when I didn't have a car?On the whole ,yes, though you can always overcome that by throughing out the
TV and choosing to get involved in society.

The difference for me ,though it can get to me sometimes, is that my firends are friends and not roomate problems-and roomates suck.

America probably would be better off if our geography hadn't been reshaped by automobiles-but that happened over tthirty years ago.Cars arn't going away,we're just goin to gradually convert to smaller hybrids and eventually to hydrogen-hopefully with
solar, wind and tidal as the electrical sources.

As for catastrophic economic change,I've lived through three nuclear wars, two great depressions, a storage battery materials collapse, one or two final crisis of capitalism, and a Y2K crisis-none of which happened in the end.

There are real and profound problems with global warming and gradual oil shortages-and every time one of these guys anounces
we're headed for "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" he undermines their credibility.

You are probably right but but bad things can happen very slowly, and while there will be enough gasoline for now anyway the car culture does not make for a happy society, there is to much time driving without the opportunity to make contact while traveling. Being a car culture and being less crowded then Blity, it must seem like Sunday on a Friday night.

I did hear that Washington was a better city the London socially and London was a bit like NY with the fealing of being cut off even with lots of people around.

you DON"T want to live in Washington DC, or any of the Northern VA suburbs!! ! I do work up in those areas and they have got to be the absloute most stressful places to live on the planet! The area stays grid-locked with extreme automobile traffic all hours of the day. They typical commute is about 60 minutes one way! The people in that area have a very snooty attitude, especially if they are in a high-paying position. They simply don't care and will back stab and step on anyone's toes to cheat their way to the top! Even the people at the bottom are awful. Hotel clerks, parking lot attendants, restaraunt workers all basically act like it's a real chore and a problem to do anything for you, and when they do, they typically screw it up, like loosing your reservations, botching your order, locking keys in your car, etc. Not to mention the fact they do everything slow.

I've had people make the worst noise about stuff. For instance, I had a customer start calling everying rank of management at our shop because we could not have someone up there to change a lamp in a video projector...one that we warned them previously was going to fail soon. Well , when we go there, we found out that the projector is in a part of the building that is not being used anymore, and that it didn't matter if the projector worked or not. They just wanted to stir up trouble, make noise, and cause problems...Typical DC resident!! !

I have also done work in New York city. It's amazing how much more pleasant it is in NYC after dealing with DC on a regular basis

On my drive to work i usually associate people with the car that they drive. If i see the same car day after day i think to myself that its the lady in the black toyota. I have no idea where she works or where she lives, but i've seen her everyday for months or even years. After seeing the same car day after day for a few years, seeing that car is almost like seeing a friend. It's odd, but thats the feeling that i get.
