I used to complentate puncturing my ear drums and making myself deaf because sound was so bad for me. It was because often times it could not be escaped from.

As an NT person, I sometimes feel lost without sound. When I drive alone for long periods of time, I start to feel strange without sound. I will turn on the radio to listen to music or National Public Radio. Without these sounds, I feel like I am floating out of my body. I just desperately crave human contact.

Does anyone ever feel that they absolutely need sound for company? Or is this just an NT thing.

no it's not weird at all, i like listening to music when i am in the car or cleaning the house, but sometimes i just crave pure silence...;was worse when i was little though, i literally walked around with my fingers in my ears...

Think about how it feels to hear nails skreeching down a blackboard. That might help to understand.

I know people with AD(H)D like that.

As for me, I love music so always listen to it and it helps stop the chatter of thoughts in my brain. Also, an ADHD thing.

But I think I'll be alright without it. I definitely don't crave human contact.

I never feel the need for company. Occasionally I like to talk to people, but I can do that through the internet.

I should tell you a little more about myself. I am a special education teacher who works with blind kids. Before I worked with blind kids, I worked with blind adults.

I took a look at Pensive's blog. I rarely encounter anyone as self-aware as Pensive. Most NT people are not able to understand their feelings as well as you. Your self-awareness even shows up in your self-portrait/avatar.

I can't drive without sound coming from the radio...That's not the kind of sound that bothers me. Certain noises are worse than others. Sharp, loud sounds are harder for me to endure than background noise. I don't like the sound of loud laughter, either. Or loud, persistent coughs. Or loud, persistent snores. Those are the kinds of noises I cannot handle.

I assume it could be irritateing, because his brain might process it in other ways besides just hearing. That's been my experiance anyway.
