So I've been watching Big Bang Theory and while I couldn't care less about the show, I can't stop watching it. I saw the pilot and I've been working my way through the series(I can't get in to a show unless I see it from the beginning) and I can't stop until I see every episode. Has anyone else had a "special interest" you don't care about, but can't seem to get away from?

I get obsessed at times with things i don't care about. I finally broke out of that habit recently. My obsessions are finally under control.

Urgh, yes.
There's a TV show that I cannot stand, but in order to justify my hatred of it I feel the need to know lots about it and am constantly checking for news about it, reading the Wiki, forums etc almost as often as I do for my special interest. It's torture sometimes.

I'm not a geek, so most 'geeky' interests really go over my head. Computers and the internet especially - I really only use it to talk to people, and IRL I'd really prefer to talk to someone who wouldn't say the computer is one of their hobbies.

I agree, a special interest is usually something you care about. Sometimes people are just obsessed though, or perceived to have superior knowledge on something they're not so interested in.

I've done that many times. I've started a TV series or series of books, and become obsessed with them, to the point that have to re-watch/re-read them over and over, even though the later shows/books are a lot worse than the first or I have seen everything so many times that I'm completely bored.

I always care about them initially. But there have been times when I've been stuck on them--just mentally stuck, rather than desiring to spend time with them. So I guess I know where you guys are coming from.

Back when I collected comic books I felt I had to get the titles that everyone else liked: ie the most popular titles, where I really liked the more obscure stuff. I think the only popular comic I liked was Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing. I collected X-Men far after I had lost interest in the title for example. I think that pressure was why I stopped collecting eventually, in the "dark 90's" where everyone was drawing like Rob Liefield, and the art was one of the main reasons I got comics. OT I had Lymes which left me with a hand tremor for a few years which ended my dreams of becoming a professional artist, so I no longer needed the comic books to learn to draw from.

Yeah, getting addicted to doing things that you really don't want to do can get quite annoying.

Basically I have no desire to watch BBT on an intellectual level and I don't find it entertaining, but I feel like I need to know everything there is to know about the show and watch every episode ever made. Which comes out to something like 35 solid hours of programming. Which is why I'm troubled. I have better things to do than watch an unfunny sitcom about theoretical physicists and their bubbly aspiring actress neighbor but I can't seem to stop watching until I've seen every episode.

I wouldn't say I have a special interest that I don't care about, but I can and do get obsessive over things that I no longer really enjoy, but can't seem to let go.

For instance, I watch Glee regularly, and have since the first season, but I rarely like the episodes, at least not entirely. I love musicals, and appreciate the topic of 'outcasts', so I feel like I HAVE to like it or something. I typically come away from an episode thinking it was very corny and overall not enjoyable, but I still watch the next week.

MW3, realized at one point that I wasn't having any fun. If I had my xbox with me and that was the only game I had I would sit down and easily play it for at least 3 hours straight.

I posted a topic a few months ago about something I've experienced that sounds like the same thing:
