I don't like them for socializing, but I don't mind them for important stuff, though I do pace constantly when I'm on one of those calls.

I also dislike talking on the phone, its my least favorite form of communication. In order it would go something like this:

Social Media (IM, FB etc) - Email and Forums - In person - Phone calls

Yes, even socializing in person makes me feel more comfortable, so I must really dislike it! In a professional manner its not as bad, I find it helps if I prepare in my head what I'm going to say and the scenarios I may come across. For socializing it feels like I'm on the spot to create some good conversation, and because they can't see you you don't truly know how they have reacted to what you have said. Plus I pretty much have to stop everything I'm doing in order to have a phone call as I'm a poor multitasker.

Totally shitty and i plainly refuse to do it by now. Each Sunday evening my NT sister forces 2 hours of small talk on me. I deactivated the landline, she gave me a cell phone. I lost the cell phone, she gave me another one. But i don't want this anymore, even more so since cell phones may cause brain cancer and are definitely bad for my thyroid, which causes problems anyway. My sister could as well email me.

If she gives you another cell phone, smash it and let her see it and say, "NO PHONES!"

I really don't like talking on the phone, even with people I know. When I talk to people I know, I like it to be a one on one conversation with them. With people I don't know, I only communicate with them when I read the text they type and then I reply to it, because it's really easy to do. Any other way, I'm too uncomfortable around strangers to say anything to them, but if I can't see them or hear them, it's easy to communicate.

There is nothing redeeming about the telephone. Not the conversations, the sound, or the anxiety. My cell phone is always on silent and for emergenciezs only and our land line has not handset near me. Thats what answering machines are for.

I don't like phone calls. Neither making or answering them. It's hardest to call someone and keep the conversation going. I manage to do it though. Somehow.

I don't like phones.

I hear voices in them.

I typically won't answer the phone and neither will my wife. It just feels like an intrusion to me, even if it's family or friends. I'll let them leave a message if they want to and then I'll return the call when I'm ready. What's funny is that the only time I'll answer is if it's a telemarketer. :shameonyou: I'll answer, let them start speaking and then just hang up - and I don't feel the least bit guilty or rude about it.

No phones, ever. Outgoing, incoming, not possible.

Luckily someone eventually invented the internet.

Phone calls that last for hours can be a waste of time. During some circumstances, phone calls are needed.. and more efficient and tactful than e-mail.

Texting is generally a waste of time. Not the medium, but the content of it.

I don't particularly like calling people I don't know, but I'll do it.

Phones ringing are an unwelcome intrusion... I get ya there.

Oh lord, I HATE phones....I hate the ringing sound they make, and the feeling of people "getting in" at you. We deal with people all the time out in the real world, and home should be a place where we don't have to deal with people or talk to them if we so choose - and phones violate this, IMO. When I was still living with my dad and stepmom and the phone would ring all the time, I would BEG them to PLEASE just disconnect all the phones in the house...and then they'd give me this weird look and say, "Well, then people couldn't get in touch with us." Well, that was the idea.

I think part of my anxiety related to phones (I actually think I have a full - blown "telephobia" - fear of phones) is that I used to have these really controlling friends (one in 4th grade and another in high school) who would call me over and over again about the same thing and hang on the phone with me for HOURS, talking at me right in my ear with overloud voices. Another thing that probably triggered it was being in the kitchen when my dad was calling my mom (they're divorced/remarried) and they got into a fight...I could hear my mom screaming obscenities at my dad at least one room away.

So yeah, I could manage very well without phones...some people seem to regard it as another method of verbal harrassment. I don't see why people can't just email me; I'm within arm's reach of my laptop almost all the time and wouldn't miss anything that way.

lol. I feel like that. But when I have no choice I start preparing myself about half an hour before. If I need to make an appointment somewhere I will always go there in person to avoid the phonecall wherever possible. I've been told by a friend that my speech sounds more disjointed on the phone.

edit: I don't like speaking on the phone to people I know either, for the most part.

I have a lot of trouble calling people I don't know such as ordering a Pizza. When I am talking to someone I know, I am often direct and to the point. I do not enjoy phone calls at all, it brings out all of the communication difficulties of AS for me.

As I've said in previous threads about phones & calls, I wish that telephones were not part of daily life. The only time I really want one, is for emergencies. Otherwise, I can be perfectly happy with eMail, or even to drive across town to talk to somebody, rather than to get all screwed up with a miscommunicated, misunderstood, stressful phone call.

As a logical person, I see the pitfalls of feeling this way, I have to admit. Case in point; I will often spend time and drive somewhere to a store to see if they have something I need, when I could just call and ask. But somehow it seems more comfortable to blow the whole day driving from place to place, to accomplish the same thing.
