Not keeping up with change in discussion

Does anyone do this: If I'm in a group of people and the topic of discussion shifts, I will still be stuck on the previous topic and not even detect the shift. Then I'll say something relating to the original topic and everyone suddenly gets quiet and looks at me like I have 5 heads. It's like I'm running 2 or 3 sentences behind. I hear everyone talking but it's not registering because I'm still in a bubble thinking about the first topic.

Yes I think a lot of people here could relate to that. We have trouble "going with the flow" of a conversation.

Stick with the same group of people long enough and they will get used to your inability to notice the changes. At least that is my experience. Strangers don't understand though.

Topic shifts and I still have something I want to say or finally figured out something to say from previous topic while they shift topics 3 or more times. They then say their goodbyes and leave.

Yes. I frequently continue talking about earlier topics of conversation. I think one of my most used stock conversational phrases is 'going back to what we were talking about earlier', which I use to slightly mask the fact that I haven't really followed the progression of the conversation. I think this way people just assume I was really interested in the earlier topic.

Yep. I do not do group conversations because of this. I just sit quietly and do not bother to try to even pay mid to what is being said. I will only get lost if I try.

Yep. I sometimes tend to bring up previous topics of discussion, particularly if the prior topic was something I'm interested in and the followup wasn't. I'll also often come up with something to say right as the conversation moves on to something else. I'll sometimes talk over others as well, or cut them off when they pause.

I occasionally do this. The latter topic is almost always more interesting than the former topic too :/
