I am a composer, and it seems like my mind is always looking for a formula, something that will help me create what in my mind is 'perfect music'. It is like no matter what I touch, not necessarily music btw, I try to find some fixed, unalterable formula.

Does anyone experience this?

Yes, just like that - though my formulas are constantly being refined

Edit: I probably think more in models than in formulas, but with models come formulas, and once you have a model for something you just find the optimal coefficients for the formula and the process becomes straightforward. However people are incredibly difficult to model in depth.

Everything is a formula of some kind. One formula to good music is using the idea of fractals musically. A good example of this is the famous Canon in D by Pachebel.

I like to find the patterns in things and see how they relate to other unrelated systems. Like the branching of trees and the branching of lightning. Different things, but the same nonetheless.

Patterns, formulas, structures, they exist whether observed or not. Knowing of them is a route to controlling them. And making creative recombinations.

I think you have the same illusion as I had about the conscious mind. I've created a topic to discuss that (here).
