Maybe you've met some of those folks who like wearing recycled hemp sandals, crunching granola, wearing dreads or tie-dyed shirts, making bead necklaces or bracelets and bemoaning the establishment. Yes, the "hippie" types...and you know, ironically I thought that due to their eccentric nature that they'd get along better with Aspies but being an Aspie myself this was definitely not my experience!! In the past, from the few hippie-types I met (mostly in my early 20s), they were actually quite abrasive and short-tempered, and not at all tolerant (much less accepting) of my quirks. They didn't like anyone to disagree with or question their point of view about the establishment, in the slightest - one guy kept insisting, maybe a little too prophetically, that one day the government is going to quash our civil liberties and exists only to serve the interests of the rich however they go about doing that in whichever Machiavellian fashion. (This was in the mid-late 1990s, before the sh*t hit the fan in the 2000s decade with certain events that I need not mention here, as that's for another discussion thread. 8O )

As I was trying to get my foot in the door in the corporate world (which I am in today), they decried my decision saying that I'll just be another pawn on the chessboard and the system's rigged blah blah blah. One of them who I lived with briefly even told me that "you'd better get your head checked first, because something's wrong with you, I can see you snapping and doing something crazy one day." :o This was before my Asperger diagnosis. And I never did any such thing that this tree-hugging veggie-guy said I would.

You'd think that we'd have had a shared bond of eccentricity and being at odds with the established order, because we both feel it is detrimental to our disposition...but NOPE...we were virtually natural enemies!! 8O Funny that...

Well, there can be inflexible jerks in any group of people, even pot smokers. I do get along with these types because the ones I get along with aren't about waving their philosophical ideas in my face, and are pretty laid back, live and let live types. There is always that one who will ramble without provocation about the evils of banking or whatever, but those are pretty easy to identify and avoid (even for an aspie). It is just a matter of finding people with things in common, like we both like making jewelry, or we both like riding bikes, or we both like hula hooping. The ones who are super far out there with paranoia about the man and their rigid rules for how society needs to be, etc, I don't have to spend time with them.

Basically, there are difficult and confrontational people in any group of persons, it is best to find people who accept you and who let you be you, regardless of your or their affiliations or ideals.

In my neighbor hood there are quite a few, some very open and tolerant and others that think they are they are. They are as judgmental as anyone else. There are a------s in every group but some who think they are the most open minded of all are the most closed minded.

i never seem to run into the "hippie types" to begin with, at least based on external appearance. It is like trains on two different tracks that never meet. My social "world" consists mainly of social workers and my fellow mentally ill, though have no doubt i've run into a hippie just not known it. My appearance may be the opposite of worldly...i just never seem to end up in a conversation with a hippie, and no hippie or anyone with earrings other than on their ears has ever tried to strike up a conversation with me either.

I'm pretty much a "hippie type" myself, and I still don't get along with them any better than I do with other people. They can be very snobbish, actually.

No group of people exists as a generic subtype that is universally predictable. Many only want to hear others parrot their narrow minded point of view, and this includes liberals, conservatives, libertarians, socialists, communists and any other group of people you may find. I'm a mix of conservative and libertarian myself and tend to be very tolerant yet I know liberals who are very intolerant and unable to hear a dissenting point of view. What you need to find in life are people who are not obnoxious jerks. This is harder to do than you think and not something you can easily find just by looking at what group they belong to.

This one pothead....err Rastafarian who I was discussing the constitution of a hypothetical world government was all "but there'll be peace and we'll have evolved" when I pointed out the jurisdiction should extend to human settlements in space....

Perhaps "Smoke Weed Everyday" should not be taken too literally :P

The problem with this thread is "hippie types" are not hippies, they are posers. The people most of you are talking about are douche bags. 25 years ago I was going to people's park in Berkley (when it was still a public park) and hanging out with the real hippies. I was NOTHING like them but they accepted me immediately and completely. I was always welcome and they always shared food and drinks with me. Please don't compare hippies to "hippie type" douche bags.

Mostly I get death threats from Tumblr anons calling me racist/sexist/homophobic/too conservative/too liberal/ableist/cis scum/etc. because I pointed out a glaring logical flaw in their argument, even though a lot of times I may agree with their cause.

I have extensive experience with hippies. I have lived at Twin Oaks intentional community 5 years. While there are certainly many fine distinctions between individuals, as a general rule, I have found hippies to be characterized by pacifism, left-wing ideology and an earnest attempt to be sensitive and tolerant. However, these fine qualities are accompanied by a judgmental, inflated sense of their values' worth. They can be snobs and hypocrites, which is made especially salient by their theatric, often faltering, projections of acceptance and celebrating diversity. A lot of of "politically correct" vernacular I find repressive. Supposedly "the hippies were right." I do not consider drug use, which has become rampant in US culture since the groovy Beatles, to be a credible tenet. Further left, we have polyamory which, in my observations, is quite destructive of intimacy and, certainly, raising families. All in all, I appreciate the nonviolence but do not readily accept the irresponsibility which I consider core to the hippie experience.

On a personal note, the hippies here treat me like a freak. And, yes, I generally work more than most, which makes that somewhat galling.

It helps you think, arguably.

There was some documentary which reported on polyamorous families (i.e. not mormon Polygamists) and they did a decent-esque job of raising the children.

LOL.

Let me guess. You browse all the gender war/culture war BS which infests Tumblr worse than Livejournal or even goddamned DEVIANTART could stomach?

Link me some =P

EDIT: Also, I forgot. Tumblr is FULL of Hipsters.

Yes, I generally do. I suppose the fact that I am a jaded idealist helps...

More importantly, my best friend is one!
