Can you steer your obsessions.

Alright we all have obsessions, but are you able to create obsessions on subjects you typically have no interest.

I'm thinking about learning french because I live in canada, and I love language.

However for me french is kinda uninteresting, so I'm working hard to create a fixation, has anyone else ever done this?

I can't make myself become obsessed with something, but with enough self-discipline I can sort of curb an obsession before it fully takes over. It depends on whether it's an obsession I want or an intrusive one I don't want. If I do want it, I can't stop it, because I don't want to. If that makes sense.

Ill always have obsessions - usualy about things i like. They dont last long if the subject isnt that interesting, and sometimes if somenoe elses interests are - interesting - enough ill have a go at theirs.

I Must be interested in whatever interest I'm Engaging in; thats very crucial for me, not just interest, but in life in general.

In my experience, all you can do is find substitutes. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't.

Command and Conquer curbed my Dune 2000 obsession and is a better game.

Across the Sun curbed my Killswitch Engage obsession.

However, some things you can't find a better substitute for, so you just have to let it run its course...like my current My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic obsession.

I can't force myself to get obsessed with something I am not into. I also can't force myself to get obsessed with something I like. However if it's something I get into, I am hooked on it and I can't stop looking it up online and it can last a few days or a few weeks.

Well, sometimes I can sort of piggyback a new subject on an existing interest. Like learning French in order to read about another obsession, in that language. Contrary to what one might think there's a lot of information in other languages that doesn't get translated into English (I learned that the hard way at the university). So you could use the possibility of gaining more knowledge about something you already find interesting as an incentive to learn French.

The only way is to provide a carrot like a French speaking girlfriend

I have a very hard time doing that.

I can only force myself to try and like things versus not liking them before.

I can't make myself become obsessed with something. Obsessions just happen with me. But to me, obsessions are important, which is extremely hard to explain to NTs. I find it so difficult to put my obsessions aside to do more important things. I'm even unhappy in my new job because I know I can't get the bus as often as I did (getting this certain bus was, and still is, my obsession. Well, the drivers that drove it is the obsession, not the actual bus, although I do love that bus route too). I do want to look for a job where I have to get this certain bus to get to, but it's not as simple as that, being so jobs are hard to come by these days, and I should just think myself lucky I have this job.

But I can't make myself be obsessed with something else. I remember when I was about 14 or 15, two of my younger cousins were obsessed with cars (they were NTs), and I wanted to be obsessed with cars too. So I tried to be obsessed with cars, but deep down I wasn't interested. They knew everything about cars, but all I knew was just about Peugeots. Then I felt silly when there was a new Peugeot coming out with the number 407, and then my cousin said to someone about some sort of movie or game called ''Prince of Persia'' coming out, and I misheard and thought he said ''there's a new Peugeot coming out'', so I decided to use my little knowledge of cars and so I said, ''oh yes, it's the 407, is it?'' And he was like, ''no, I said Prince of Persia''.

So a few weeks after that I gave up trying to be obsessed with something I'm not.

No. No control over that. Life would be considerably easier if I could pick and choose the items that take my interest at will. Nor can I will myself to stop obsessing about something.

I cannot make myself obsess on anything. Sometimes I have to make myself not obsess on things so much or it'll get too bad.
