I used to be irritated by the way seatbelts chafed my neck, but eventually I grew enough that they no longer cut so high and rested across my chest like they were meant to. With regard to weighted blankets, you can make one for about half the price of buying one if you're any good at sewing; my mother made me an eight pound one for my birthday last year and the fabric and the beads together cost around $70. Weighted lap pads are also a good starting place because they're a lot cheaper than the blankets are.

See if you can't pick up an old lead apron (the kind used as radiation shielding) from a hospital or dentist's office. It'd probably work just fine as a weighted blanket, and could even be inserted into a real blanket to weight it down with some DIY know-how.

I HATED seatbelts when I was a kid. They always dug into my neck so I'd move the shoulder strap behind my back.

I have a 25 pound weighted blanket that my friend helped me make. I LOVE it!! !! ! I feel totally relaxed when it's covering me. Now it feels really weird and it's hard to sleep when I don't have it on me at night.

I have a russian greatcoat that is incredibly warm and weighs a ton. I love it. Hate the seatbelt, it rubs against my neck and collarbone. I'm always yanking it away from me.

That sounds like such a good idea, I checked google and found this.
Sewing Tutorial: How to Make a Weighted Blanket
http://mamasmiles.com/sewing-tutorial-h ... y-blanket/

I'm thinking about making one of these for my son, and then my nephew. They're both about six feet tall and skinny.
How long and how wide should the weighted part be? Should it be so-many inches wider than the shoulders?
Do you tuck in an un-weighted part at the feet, or is it weighted all the way down and leave it loose?

Is it too warm in the summer?

I want to make one of these. I have a hard time sleeping without lots of heavy blankets on top of me, which is fine in the winter but can be problematic during the summer months.

Depending on the materials used, its not that hot in the summer! I used mine all last summer.

I mean, the heavy blankets I use now get toasty in the summer.

I like seat belts. They keep you from shifting around in the car and losing your balance when the car turns or stops. You might think that's a trivial thing, to keep your balance while sitting in a moving car without a seat belt, but it is still a small, constant expenditure of energy for someone who is dyspraxic and has to pay attention to keep track of their body parts!

I like the feeling of wearing a seat belt. Never tried a weighted blanket, but I don't think I would like it. I like to use a really lightweight bedspread, with a quilt over it in cold weather, and thin light airy sheets on the bed.

I checked at Michael's arts & crafts - $9.62 for a two-pound bag of poly-pellets. The website for JoAnn's says it's $7.48 for the two-pound bag, which is better, but much farther away. I need at least eight bags. Add the material, and I have a feeling this isn't happening today. But someday.

For those who use them: How wide is the weighted part around your shoulders? Do you need it to cover all the way down to your feet? Do you tuck it in at the foot of the bed, or leave it loose?

Mine is about 4'x.5.5' and the weight is distributed evenly throughout the blanket.

No, but I like wearing things on my head, a golden bejeweled crown would be nice, I like shiny things.
