medication and AS.
ASD can cause anxiety due to social situations; depression due to reasons that are self-evident; a whole slew of co-morbid mental disorders are common in those with ASD too. Anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medication is common (I take both), I believe people also take newer generations of anti-psychotics that also help.
Yeah...I take medication (SSRI) due to OCD and social anxiety (Valium, Xanax and whatever) that's directly caused by my autism.
E: I've recently discovered that the medication I'm taking helps me immensely; I wouldn’t even be able to post here otherwise….
I am not a diagnosed AS but for my Depression, OCD and Social Anxiety I was put on Prozac around the age of 15. It made me blank out and my OCD got alot worse. Apparently when I went to get into a car I would get in and out repeatedly untill I was shouted at after the 12th or so time, I have no recollection of it at all.
But it did apparently make me more social. I don't think so but others do.

I was first put on prozac as well. i hated the s**t. i took it for no more than 10 days or so and screw that. then they suggested lexapro, paxil, etc.
i refused to take them and they thought i was being defiant.
but now i take a daily benzo for anxiety.
i like your name Valhalla.
are you still on meds?

Thanks and God no ... I took them for a few months but refused to take them and refused to go back to the therapy sessions they were providing (This was 5 years ago). It has got to the stage though that I'm booking an appointment to see an AS specialist and try medication again.

i have found that with taking the medication i do, it lessens my anxiety which in turn lessens the ocd. i have no side effects and feel good for the most part. i would be interested to hear what the specialist said.

I don't think there is any medication for AS itself, but there are medications available for some of the symptoms of AS as described above.
I take Prozac (used to take Venlafaxine and it made me dangerously ill) which really helps me and also Oxazepam for serious anxiety, and Xanax for anxiety during the day as Oxazepam works well for me but can make me tired.
I am also on the Gluten Free diet and have now adopted a low casein diet. The GF diet has helped me immensely as I used to be either tired or hyper all the time - even as a baby! And now I feel awake, but not manic or hyper.
I also find that L-Glutathione has helped with my anxiety, which surprised me a little, but I'm just glad it works.
But this is just my individual experience and as you can see from reading these posts, everyone is different. A medication that works effectively for one person could make another person ill.
I believe that it is possible to find medications that work for you, but you have to be prepared to try a few different things before you find what's right for you, and you have to accept that you may get a little worse before you get better.
The best thing is to do research on whatever medication you are prescribed so that you are aware of possible side effects, and try to get a doctor who is understanding (I know this is easier said than done!) and try to have good and regular comminication with your doctor.
Hi Valhalla, I too am familiar with the joys of the NHS! I don't know if you've already tried this, but I find that phoning or writing and very politely trying to get them to commit to a date or timescale can help things to happen a little more quickly. You have to be super-polite though as they can get a little defensive otherwise.
I'm a big fan of advocacy too - although that's just me. But if you are interested MIND or a local autism / AS support organisation might be able to offer advocacy services which can also hurry things along.
Well, it's just a suggestion.
Good Luck.
My only current diagnosis is bipolar disorder, though I was prev. dx'd with depression/panic/anxiety disorders. I've taken a tricyclic antidepressant, some SSRIs, none of which did much good for me. I do take clonazepam (Klonopin) for anxiety, and it helps. I'm currently taking Depakote (a mood stabilizer) which seems to have helped a bit more than the antidepressants but not much. I'm very curious as to what will happen when I'm assessed for Asperger's.
Is that an individual thing or a drug thing that they aren't working?
