If there is rice stuck at the bottom, I usually leave it soaking in water for a little while. You can wash it all down the sink if you have a garbage disposal. My bil puts every kind of food down his. I think he thinks it's better for the environment because he's really into that kind of thing being from Berkeley CA. If you don't have one, just uses one of those sink strainers, and whatever goes through those little holes should not clog your sink. Just be careful about pouring grease down the drain.

Any reason why?

After I've emptied the pan of rice onto my plate there is still some rice that remains in the pan which can't be shaken out. If I want to wash the pan what should I do? I'm worried that if I rinse the rice down the sink it will block it.

My advice is to take a paper towel (or a warm wet cloth) and wipe the excess rice remains out of the pan into the garbage. You can use a little finely ground salt and a little baking soda to scrub with (it's cheap and it's not bad on septic systems or the environment). I usually keep a small plastic container filled with a tablespoon of bleach and warm water close by for my "cleaning cloth" when I am tidying up in the kitchen. After you're all done you can empty the bleach water and hang up the cloth to dry. Don't forget, if you're cleaning alot, change the bleach water often with clean water and another tablespoon of bleach. A touch of lemon juice will make it smell good and also is a good/healthy cleaning product. I live in the country, so I have learned that cleaning off countertops with bleach water also keep the ants away :-D

Prometheus, grease tends to clog up drains.

My mother used to keep an empty tin at the back of the stove and she'd tip any grease into it, when it gets full-ish you throw it out.

Re rice:

I put all kinds of stuff down the sink, lotta tea leaves... a plunger will take care of most problems and boiling water will clear a lot of fatty blockages too.

Some people use those triangular plastic sink strainers that sit in the corner of the sink - they're perforated so liquid runs out but they hold any solids like rice or food scraps, trouble is, they're just something else you have to clean.

It works in a pinch when your hair refuses to stay down...

If you have drain trouble, just pour some bleach down it.

The hot liquid grease solidifies when cold water goes down the drain, creating the clog.

Just pour the grease in the trash can.

Though, sometimes, if it's just a little olive oil, I will put it down the drain since olive oil is monounstaurated and won't turn to a solid at room temperatures.
