Neuropsychology
I'm currently in a speech pathology Ph.D program, although I'm in the Masters portion right now (second and last year before getting Masters). However, I'm having doubts about whether or not speech pathology is really the career for me, given my intense interest in learning disabilities, and specifically how underlying perceptual deficits cause problems with learning and functional abilities. So I'm thinking about leaving the speech program after I finish my Masters, working for a year to get my certification (clinical fellowship year), and then applying to a program in neuropsychology. Is there anyone on here who is studying neuropsychology who could give me some advice on different programs or neuropsych educational tracks?
That sounds interesting. I can't help you with neuropsychology, but I CAN tell you that my mom is a speech pathologist, and she works at a school district with a caseload made up primarily of children with autism and/or learning disabilities. I think most speech pathologists (who work in schools, anyway) do, so if you are interested in learning disabilities and how they affect abilities, speech pathology might still be a good option. Every day is a lesson in autism and learning disabilities for my mom...
Maybe you already know this, but I just thought I'd share. Whatever you end up doing, good luck!
Fantastic news. It amazes me that one of the reasons the psych I just saw said he wouldn't give me a dx of AS was that I "chose to study social work"...and there you are with a dx considering neuropsychology!
Best wishes!!
