No Teeth or Dental Implants?

I sure wish that humans had evolved from birds! No teeth! So much easier!

My daughter's mouth is a mess from seizures, grinding teeth and not the best dental hygiene in the past. We've spoken to several dentists, each with enough of a different opinion from the others that I'm more confused than ever. Should she just be toothless or get dental implants? I don't want partials, dentures or bridges, one, because I think that she wouldn't wear dentures and, two, they're all dangerous if she gets a seizure.

It seems that the dentists all agree that dental implants are a little safer than real teeth for seizure sufferers.

Without teeth, she can't eat.

Get implants. For her benefit.

Correction: She can't chew. You can still eat liquid based stuff.

But yes, given those two choices I'd say implants.
Keep in mind that if she's still grinding that could affect any implants.

I forgot to mention that she has a few in tact molars covered with stainless steel so she can chew some things. I'm surprised when she's able to chew up an almond.

Some of the issues that the dentists talk about are putting her under multiple times. Some say they can do the tooth extractions and setting the implant posts all at once and others say that the posts and extgractions have to be done separately. I think that some dentists might privately think that she's not worth the trouble or the expence. Maybe I'm wrong about that. It hurts me to have thoughts like this.

Ahh yes i agree soooo much... my teeth are not the best either... although i do not have grinding issues i have seizure issues like your daughter probably. and due to severe neurological swallowing issues the minute i put tooth paste in my mouth i aspirate it into my lungs, so brushing teeth = FAIL mouth wash = OK but im afraid to go to the dentist this year... ive had this disease and swallowing problem (progressive) for a little over a year now

I have bruxism also. If she had dentures, she could still eat somewhat. Implants are EXPENSIVE, and give little feedback, so she could hurt herself with a seizure, etc.... It could ALSO give her bell's palsy or similar if done wrong.

On the plus side, as I recall, implants are created to basically screw the teeth in. If she damages the new teeth, they CAN replace them without more drilling, etc...

Couldn't they also 'design' them shorter, or er, better to not harm her during her seizures.

Maybe it would make her feel good to have them.

Almost biting through your tounge though it heals fast isn't very fun.

Actually, they have to be a precise length! Too short, and they won't allow her to really eat. Too big, and there could be big problems.

A problem I had with one of my molars due to an earlier IDIOT orthodontist is a good example. The sad part is I predicted it DECADES ago, and I still have a couple other predictions waiting to happen.

Anyway, it was tilted SLIGHTLY, and off by perhaps a half millimeter. I got CTS(Cracked tooth syndrome ) from it taking too much stress. I had to get a cap.

Anyway, you CAN'T just simply CAP such a tooth. The real tooth has less surface area, and capping would give it the same stress, so it would likely fail again, only sooner. They capped it at an angle, so the top is now straight. They ALSO took a LONG time asking me to bite onto some paper, and filing the cap, so it was JUST the right height.

Reading what people have said have made this even more complicated. I'm pretty sure that we'll get front teeth implants for her. She feels bad about her mouth. It's expensive but I'd rather have her having a mouth that makes her happy than getting a new car.

She bites her tongie and lips sometimes. I know people say to not put anything into the mouth but we know what we're doing and if we get tape-wound tongue depressors into her mouth before it clamps down, we save her from damage.

I have heard stories about implants costing over $30,000! That is about the price of TWO small cars or a VERY nice family car! For about that much, you can probably get a top of the line ford taurus X. It seems like a nice car. Roomy, etc...

Of course, cost depends on how you have it done, and by whom. The two most expensive parts are probably the ACTUAL implants, and the teeth. some have like each tooth done seperately, which probably lasts the best, but is the most expensive, and some have ranges done. That means fewer real implants for a larger area, but a lower cost.

I HAVE looked into it a bit. I still have my mouth full of my teeth. I can't say I have all my teeth, because I have a small mouth, and big teeth, so many were removed. Even I can't find a single gap though. The WORST work I had done was one cap(because of an idiot dentist's braces). Still, my teeth aren't in the best shape. I was VISCIOUS in trying to keep them clean, and I guess I just went too far. Also, I haven't seen the dentist much.
