Sometimes I do this in conversation with strangers just to keep a conversation going.

In private I can ask questions as a kind of stim or compulsion - for example, asking my mum "where's the cat?"- even if the cat is right in front of me or I know I already asked this question five minutes ago. I sometimes do this when a painful memory bubbles up in my head and it helps block this out.

I've often wondered why my mum hasn't commented on me behaving like this...

I've done this in the past just to start a conversation. If someone tries to teach me things I already know then at least we're interacting. Obviously it's not the best way to get people talking but if I have nothing meaningful to say it's like the Autistic version of small talk. I don't do it as often I used to.

Edit: Added the word often to the last sentence because it didn't make sense

only when i need confirmation/reassurance, which is often.

also i ask when someone suspects that i'm not caring, like when i find out something by myself and they may be wondering why i didn't ask them.

I no longer do this, but I used to do it all the time when I was much younger. I think it'll probably pass. :)

I used to do this as a kid. Or sometimes if someone asked me a question I'd pretend not to know the answer. I don't know why I did that. I didn't know why I did it at the time either.
