How many people are visually or hearing impaired?

Asperger's seems to be keenly related to how we perceive the world; to our ability to interpret sensory input.

Many things I now understand to be related to Asperger's have been "chalked up" throughout my life to side-effects of my Marfan syndrome (e.g., my parents would say my poor social skills are due to being physically disabled and stuck at home, but there are lots of Marfans who do just fine in social situations). There are also many things I've associated with my poor vision.

So I was wondering how many people have "separate" conditions involving visual or hearing impairment?

AS w/CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder) and have needed bifocals since my mid-thirties. Ophthalmologists find me a very difficult person to fit for eyeglasses.

Yes I have vision problems since a child cuz i use glasses and contacts and have Central Auditory Processing Disorder. That's what make aspergers such a hard thing cuz it's a combination of alot of problems rather just one thing.

I have to wear contacts cause I am quite nearly blind as a bat. I'm litterally 2 steps below legally blind. And thats just cause I'm myopic.

I also have major hearing loss in the range that most people speak in. I learned to read lips really well as a child, so that has never been much of an issue, except for people thinking they can talk from the other side of something, or behind me, and still expect me to hear them.

I have myopia (short-sightedness) (I can see well enough to get around without my glasses, but I can't see small objects) floaters and tunnel vision.

a lot of things were blamed on my hearing impairment that shouldn't have been - they couldn't tell the difference between what i didn't hear and what i screened out. hell, *i* couldn't tell the difference.
but i definitely have many sensitivities to sound, which is part of why i hate wearing hearing aids - and the old models? f**k that. everyone claimed it was a vanity thing, but during those same periods i had virtually no hygiene, was still dressed by mom, etc. so methinks it wasn't a vanity thing.

I'm farsighted and have astigmatism (eyes don't focus synchronized, so no real 3d sight, more like a tv screen)

While I still can hear high sounds (like dog whistles) very good, I have quite some problems making out human voices against background noise. Not exactly helping in social situation (party), since I find it extremely difficult to talk and understand if there is loud music.

I have worn glasses for reading and computer work since I was 35. I had my prescription upgraded last year.

I have to wear glasses. I see I used to have real good eye sight and it was a lot better than my glasses eye sight. I was known for having the eagle eye in my family when I was a teen.


My hearing, it's so hard to hear if there is noise in the room. I have to stop what I am doing to hear the person well. But if they talk loud, then I can hear them fine.

Glasses that correct to 20/20 shouldn't count. Nor should conditions related to AS, like the overstimulation you get, or difficulty understanding speech, etc.

I have mild CAPD, but I really think it's part of asperger's.

in addition to the hearing loss, i have 20/400 vision that corrects to 20/20 with contacts, but not quite there with glasses. o.o
i'm always afraid they'll get knocked off when i'm in philly at night... i wouldn't be able to find them if they did.

I have no choice but to wear glasses, I am farsighted.

I've worn glasses since 4th grade, since I read too much as a yute (what we did while waiting for someone to invent the Internet... Last time I checked I was 20/700 or so, but I'm mainly nearsighted. However, I'm getting to where I'm taking my glasses off to see things closely. But then I'm also older than dirt...

I have really poor vision but no particular condition other then really bad nearsightedness which was inherited from my parents that both have bad vision
