Yes I know it's taking a picture of yourself but WHY?! !! Are people that full of themselves that we want to see photos of you taking pics. of yourself all the time? I understand for example "Hey this is me and my sister at Disney World!" (Smile take pic!" YA! Mickey (Or something like that!) A VACATION! But not just a normal day. I hate the idea of selfies! Now it has crept into Zelda Windwaker & GTA V and the MLP Facebook asked "twilight" about them! SHEESH! I want to fight monsters in Zelda or kill people in GTA V not take pictures of "myself" (an in game character). That's just silly what's the point? Kill the monster or murder the people to further the story or game along not stop and take pictures for no reason!

I get it but I don't understand why people make a big deal of it, it's just taking your own picture... I don't know why it has to have it's own name and be so "mainstream"

In the past, and including now, I guess, I didn't have a choice but to self-take pictures. I have no family or friends so I don't have a choice. The photos I took of me were publicity shots for an album and my book.

Maybe I misunderstand the whole thing, and you're probably right in a lot of cases, but I think taking selfies is a very natural thing to do.
I don't post my face all over social networks, but I do take photos of it, simply because I want to understand it.
Humans might be extraordinarily self aware, but I think most still have some trouble estimating who they are, what they look like, what impression they make on others;
I think that's why we like to look at pictures of ourselves.

And then of course there's people who just really really want the world to think they're pretty, but the more I think about it, the more I feel like even they are just trying to convince themselves.

I've taken selfies for things like a new haircut I like or when I had my nails manicured and polished. Mainly so I'd have a visual of things that I like so I can show the hair stylist to jog her memory. And yes, sometimes to show off on Facebook the new look or a new blouse or dress I like. But, like Red Robin62, if I didn't take a "selfie," pictures wouldn't get took as there's no one around to take them.

People take pictures of themselves so much because they can, I think. Not so long ago, or in pre-history if you're a youngster I suppose, you were restricted by having a film in the camera. Now you can take as many pictures as you want, with your phone, and delete those that you don't like.

I take pictures of myself, also because there's no-one else to do it, and because it's fun and easy.

I want to destroy that word with the fires of hell!

Ahem. As a photographer I hate seeing a self-portrait brought down to such a demeaning level.

I don't mind people taking photos of themselves sometimes as no one around me even knows how to use auto focus properly let alone how to work with light and shade. But people that take photos just for the sake of it being a 'selfie' can rot in hell.

My guess that chicks take selfies is cuz when you look at yourself in the mirror, you're like "I like good" especially if you're a girl. A girl takes selfies because they want to look at themselves to make them feel more beautiful about themselves. just my theory. Ima dude so i wouldn't kno.

I take that back, dudes take selfies as well. Why? Because they can, itz so easy now with the iphones coming out. A girl probably takes more pictures in the bathroom then neil armstrong took when he was on the moon.

I don't like how I look in pictures, so the thought of doing that...*shudder*.

Selfies are pretty fun, to an extent. I am always tempted to comment silly things on sillier selfies, though.

I don't see a problem with them. Don't like doing them myself because I hate pictures of myself, but...eh, they're not bothering me about it.

Originally, the 'selfie' was taking naked pictures of yourself on your phone.

I hate selfies and I don't get them. But it just smacks of narcissim to me which makes me hate them even more.

Well if there's no-one else to take a picture of you or no-one wants to or you don't like to ask, but you want a picture of yourself, then how else are you going to get a picture of yourself? By the cat?

Exactly.

People have loved getting portraits and other renditions of themselves since forever ago. Vincent Van Gogh painted self-portraits, after all. Others paid artists to paint their pictures well before his time.

The comment about going to the moon and taking five pictures is not even relevant. People didn't have cameras in their phones and computers in 1969. Here's how the photography worked on the moon:

So people have cameras in their phones that go with them everywhere, and they take pictures. This is not in any way threatening artistic photography or heralding a decay in values or whatever. If you don't like selfies, that's fine. No one has to like them. But I find it hard to actually fault people for doing it.

As far as narcissism goes, some degree of narcissism is not a bad thing:
