My 13 year old brother destroyed my external hard drive containing 500 gigs of my favourite stuff.... I would normally "meltdown" and would have just about killed the kid, but was in such a state of shock not even that was possible for me... well I guess its still a meldown, just differently than what I'd usually have... I sorta isolated myself that night and kept calling my dad on his cell outa panic. I was like "what can I do" for about a week. I'm still not over how much stuff that I lost that was really important to me... some of which will be nearly impossible to replace, as I am one of like 2 people I have seen on the internet with those files.

It's been a long time since I've had to recover anything from a hard drive, but years ago, there were people who could recover data off of hard drives that had been in fires. There must still be such people. Maybe you could find one and recover at least some of your stuff?

I think I understand how you're feeling. I backup everything to disc and store it in a fireproof box.

Yeah, I could have it done, but at $800, it is just not worth the trouble... It is depressing to think of how much I actually lost.

I'm sorry to hear about that. =[

I understand where you're coming from. I completely panic if I misplace my iPod or get my computer taken away. In late elementary school, I had a toy figurine I carried around everywhere but he had a tendency to fall apart pretty easily. I now remember I once lost his leg and I cried for hours and wouldn't sleep or do anything but search until we found it a day later. I'm a bit better at handling things like that now though.

Boy, that really stinks. Good luck at recovering anything that you can. That is quite a blow.

If it's not worth $800, then what's the problem?
And where the hell is your backup, that would have cost you only $0,75 for a DVD...

I would pay $800 in a heartbeat to retrieve the data if it were me, even if I had to sell stuff to make the money. I can't imagine what I'd do if I lost all my data... hence why it's on my laptop, my PC, and an external hard drive, with some of the most important stuff additionally backed up online, on disks, or on my MP3 player and memory sticks.

u can get a cheap 500gb harddrive for 100$, so technically its cheaper to have a duplicate hard drive, should have went RAID.

Why did he destroy it?

How did he destroy it?

He managed to trip over cord that was carefully tuck away so that he couldn't trip over it.

As for backing up, I have always treated my stuff with such respect, and my siblings treat my stuff with the same respect (assuming they want to live after touching it), and I just wasn't expecting something like that to happen. My 5 yold bro wouldnt even trip over that cord the way it was placed. Also, I was getting a second drive soon anyways that would have helped to back it up. The odd thing is, I did have some copies of some of the stuff, specificly stuff that pertained to my obsessions at some point in my life.

Wow. 8O
I never heard of that happening before.
It seems to me it would have to be thrown out of a high window onto a sidewalk, and metal would have to crack inside for that to happen.
I wonder how you can even know that happened.
