When you were young, what did you want to be when u grow up?
This is one thing that has stuck out with me for a long time now.
Back when i was in 3rd grade, the teacher gave the class an assignment, it was a very simple one, Draw on a page what you want to be when you grow up. Everybody had their own dreams, one guy wanted to be a DJ, someone else wanted to be a doctor and another a firefighter. I on the other hand, well i didn't have a f*ckin clue. In the end the teacher even called my parents cause i "Refused" to do the work. in the end i ended up just drawing what my dad does for a living, Ive never let this down.
A few years before that i had a similar task given to me in art class. "Draw your most exciting dream". Of course, i couldn't do it. everybody else was blasting ahead on their dreams, while there i was, unable to figure it out. In the end the teacher gave me a suggestion and i went with it, i drew a picture of me Skydiving. Now to this day, the only dream i DO have, is my unrelentless need to go skydiving. (Funny thing is, this work was a drawing contest for the whole province i believe, and i somehow managed to win, i won a Tshirt and something else i forget)
Im now 23, i live by myself, and Ive had many many jobs ranging from computers, to woodworking, to a lot of other things, and even now, i don't have any ambition, i don't know what i want to do mainly cause Ive never really wanted to do anything.
Can anybody shed some light on this for me?
I said this before, but I wanted to be a surgeon.... thing is I'm an aspie with an insanly darwin awardly for of clumsiness... Padium as surgeon = insane hospital death toll due to clumsiness.... try rrighting that into a death report.... I would quickly be taken out of the medical field.
Up, even through high school (just showing how completely unrealistic I was), I wanted to be a film maker. I didn't realize the amount of social skill that sort of thing requires, I just knew that I had a lot of stories I wanted to tell and words wouldn't cut it. I still wish I could be involved in film in some way (and not just a screenwriter, but actually ON set, even if it's some low-level crew job like someone's assistant) but with the social aspect of having to kiss everyone's ass and the sensory issues which have gotten WAY worse since the age I was when I gave up that dream, it's just not possible.
So I don't dream anymore. Everytime I come up with something, there's a reason that my particular brand of AS (HUGE social issues and unbearable sensory dysfunction) would make it impossible. I was in undergrad to get a BA to go on to law school. That's impossible. I couldn't make it through law school since they favor the Socratic method so every time I went to class? Panic attacks wondering when I'd be called on.
That's why I'm only halfheartedly still in undergrad. Basically, I already came so far.
I'm not convinced you need to have some driving aspiration in your life. I mean, good for those who do, sure, but why is it a necessity? Why can't a person just enjoy their life without demanding anything specific out of it?
I actually do have aspirations, but I've been working toward those goals for a while. Some are software some are art. I took an aptitude test on a website a while ago (which turned out to be horribly, horribly outdated... apparently none of the aptitude tests that you can get online have been updated since about the 50's -- they ask questions about "adding machines" but not about calculators or cell phones). After answering all the questions it basically told me that I would probably enjoy and be good at being a computer programmer, writer or artist... so ... what I already knew really.

I like computers enough that I am studying CS at UWaterloo. I want to be a programmer, but not for that long, just long enough to enjoy it a bit and build some funds to launch my business.
biologist, but i was constantly told that i'm never able to do that when i was
young (even though i tryed to ignore them) so much for a little support -_-'
(i whas so convinced that i whas going to be a biologist oddly i stopped thinking
about it when i grew older even though i still would like it)

What I wanted to do professionally when I was a kid changed a few times. Novelist, illustrator, publisher of games.
I had to say what I wanted to be before around 11 years ago in school. I knew what I wanted to be, but I was too nervous. Can't believe why I got into plenty of trouble for not saying. Probably because it was a school lesson after all. I wanted to make my own video games at the time. Today, I still do, but I haven't confirmed without myself whether I do or not, but it's most likely.

In kindergarten, I really had no clue. I thought about it for a while during those years. As far as jobs went, I wanted to be a computer programmer (no real change from now). I've also thought about being a tyrant...
In general, I wanted to be a flightless Dodo bird. I took that question quite literally in kindergarten.
