Don't you use special tires for the winter? I've seen many movie clips from over there, showing extreme traffical chaos, when snow and ice storms occurs.
I use special tires for the winter season, and rarely have any troble. And over here, we really got bad weather in the winter season, believe me.
But I know what you mean. It have happened to me a few times, got stucked in the snow, and If I had a sledge hammer, I had probably smashed the car into a wreck. Such situations really makes my anger rise. Cheer up, the spring is coming soon

Off cause, that's a problem. I notice you come from Finland, they make the best tires. I use nokia in the winter season. Probably the best tires ever made. I also went to waasa for summer holiday one year. Great country, Finland

I meant the rocking violently back and forth in the driver's seat. Maybe if I was heavy and my car very small.
It may sound nuts, but it has actually totally saved me three times so far. My car is very small, so maybe that's why it works. If you keep rocking to the same rhythm, the car actually will rock pretty decently, and combining that with careful timing of the accelerator helps me break free. I've used it when stuck in the middle of the street or an intersection, when I don't have time to get out of the car and shovel like mad.

I am glad you got the car moving in the end, I have heard that a bunch of old cloth sacks are great for getting traction if you get stuck in mud or snow.
The other idea I have is to get a winch which you could fix one end to the front tow hook on the car and the other end to an object such as a large tree. Then you could use the winch to try to pull the car towards the tree.

bit stumped that you need advice as you describe yourself as an engineering student!
One who's had a driver's license for a month and a car for two weeks. And one whose classes are still dealing with the purely theoretical. Really, I don't think differential equations or circuit design is going to help me with a stuck car! (I did try everything that has been suggested so far. The only thing I didn't realize is that salt melting through four inches of ice probably takes overnight.) My field in engineering--biomedical--is about as far from cars as you can get, too.
Zombie survival guide? Yes, read it. Recommend it highly to anyone who likes zombies.
But I've had a bottomless backpack full of all sorts of handy things long before I did; it comes of knowing very well that nobody is going to help you and you had better take care of yourself. The first time I started carrying useful objects like that, I was about thirteen or fourteen. I don't think it's a zombie survival thing, just a geek thing. I like having ways out of any situation, and it really comes in handy when annoying things happen. If I don't have any options, or don't see any options, or have had my mental map of the future set in one way and it turns out it's going to be another, then it's almost certainly meltdown time for me. I hate that and I don't mind carrying five pounds of equipment or so if it means there's going to be less acting like a three year old kid having a tantrum.
Oh, one thing I didn't mention, that I definitely do always carry: Duct tape! Now if that isn't classic geek I don't know what is!
