I didn't own a Sega Genesis back in the 90's. Heck, I barely remember the Super Nintendo!
How was it better?
Well as any well developed gamer should tell you, it's all about the games. And towards the end I think the SNES just had a massive amount of games I liked better.
From a purely hardware point of view, the Sega Genesis had more raw computing power, but the SNES had more sophisticated sound and graphics chips.
This resulted in games for the SNES looking overall better yet often had annoying slow down. And especially in regards to the sound, SNES had amazing sound... and great game composers to take advantage of it. (well genesis did too, and it's sound wasn't bad... I may have nostalgic goggles on)
The Genesis got those add ons, Sega-CD and 32X... which segmented the market and didn't have many games to drive the platforms.
Nintendo did it's own special tricks though, by putting hardware directly on the cartridges. Star Fox and Yoshi's Island are the notable examples to use this technology.
If you said video game history is an obsession of mine... you'd be right...
