if you can avoid running on tarmac your body will be happy.
running on tarmac is not good for your joints, tendons and ligaments. you can do it but it is about damage mitigation.
i don't run much anymore but if i start i think i may consider learning to run properly barefoot (or with protective barefoot shoes) it is supposedly the best and healthiest way to run. probably not the fastest but that is not really important.
I went for a half hour run and it was very good and made me feel great.
the lake has lamposts every 20 metres or so, and last time I ran there, (a few months ago,) I ran for 2 posts and walked for one, however this time I ran for 6 lamposts and walked for one, so the jillian micharels dvd Ive been doing has definately helped my fitness.
The asics trainer were fantastic, so comfy and squishy, normally I work out at home in bare feet, so to have these squishy trainers was heaven.
I felt quite safe, as there was a few people on their way to school, so it wasnt too deserted.
Im very pleased with myself for being brave enough to do it, as Ive put it off for a long time as I was so nervous and self consious, so well done me!

Running is a great hobby, plus it's nice for goal setting and competitiveness because of the amount of races that are available. There are many distances to choose from, from a few miles to a few hundred miles! I love running and I really enjoy discovering different places. I get to know places that people usually don't get the chance to know. I run on my university's cross country team and I've been running since I was about 12 years old, and I'm still loving it. As said, there are some safety issues to consider, not just with attacks, but also in being safe next to the roads, as well as good equipment and proper fuel intake. Of course, the latter two are dependent on how much you run. It's important to be careful about the time of day you run, as running in the dark next to traffic, or next to a road in general, can be very dangerous. Wear a reflective vest if you're running during low light periods. It's also important to be careful along trails, not only for the possibility of being alone, but because of footing. Winding trails are a good for improving ankle flexibility, and it's just nice in general to run on trails, but they could also cause someone to twist ankles and one would have a difficult time getting help if it's not a very populated area. Even if you only plan on going a couple miles, it's important to be able to have a means of contacting someone if an emergency arises. One other tid-bit: It's good to stretch, but it's not the best to stretch before running. If you're muscles aren't warmed up, they could tear and then you may be out of commission for awhile. Take a stretch break during your first 10 or 15 minutes. It doesn't hurt to take a short break to stretch. Stretching afterwards, as long as you're still warm, is also great. There are so many things to learn about running, and I'm glad that another person wants to pick it up. If you have any other questions, I could try answering them.

I'm 24 years old and live in WA State. I was diagnosed with Asperger's at 9. I received a BS in Psychology in 2011 and I intend to help people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, either through research, application, or both. On the ?Pursuit of Aspieness?.
I started running weekly as well months ago. It's great exercise but I hated running alone or on treadmills. Now, I can run a 5K in 30-45 minutes. I can also say running with people who do marathons are a great motivator and/or makes for good camaraderie. I'll be doing a charity run Thanksgiving day if I remember to register.
I used to run track in high school, but even then I had sensitive knees from my years of ballet,so I pick up with it and drop it frequently in my life. For a while I was running five miles an hour outdoors, however this path, on a path on a marsh, has become so frequented with make up wearing, cell phone toting, dog walking people that I cannot bear it any more. I LOATHE gyms and where I live isn't very safe to run (drivers seem to aim themselves at pedestrians and runners) so I pathetically run in my room for anywhere from half an hour to an hour and a half.
I used to go running in huge storms, which I love and I miss.Truly exhilarating.
One thing I notice when I talk to other people who run is they don't stretch! or they don't realize how important it is! Very important for your muscles to have a break-
I was running today and watching Private Benjamin (
) and stopped about 15 minutes near the end and did all my stretching then.It felt great. It's just been too hot and sunny to run outdoors and in the evening I get hungry, try to eat two hours before going to bed according to Ayurveda, also winding down.
Anyway I hold a lunge for a minute on each side, then do the runner's stretch, splits, butterfly and a few others.
what are peoples eating schedules for running? Currently Im running on an empty stomach after Ive taken my kids to school and already done a early morning workout, which means Im very low on everything. Im worried if I eat before running I will be sick. If I run later in the day I probably wont do it (will get into cycles of procrastination lol).
so what is your eating schedule? Do you run first thing on an empty stomach or have a banana or what?
I have a few tablespoons of porridge with plenty of sugar then run, or swim, for 60 to 90 minutes early morning two or three times a week. When I get back I completely fill a large bowl with porridge then eat it in about 10 seconds.
I eat afterwards most of the time. I know I can't run after eating a meal. I cramp up. I really get hot when I run, enough to drop 5 pounds of weight, so I will usually eat a handful of something salty like pretzels or nuts prior to going and drink a good bit of water. Others use sports performance drinks. You want to be comfortable, so if you feel like you're running on empty go ahead and eat something and wait an hour before going. I eat a little when I get back and rehydrate.
