The Sport/motorsport of remote control auto racing
Ultimate F1 Winter Series, Round 6: January 22 2011
My dad and I got the car pretty well setup Friday night and the next day we did a few practice runs and got ready to race. I was feeling confident that I would do better in round 6.
Qualifying
I take the lead in the first 30 seconds of the session, however with a minute to go Jonathan Christian takes it right back from me, I qualify second and I am beaten for first by 3 hundredths of a second.
Round 1
For the first two minutes, Jonathan and me chase each other for the lead. I am faster than he is on the right side of the track, where Jonathan is faster on the left side; this is a true tug of war for position! Later on Jonathan makes a mistake and I go on to take the lead. As I go in for my first pit stop there is already a car in there and I have to drive out, I go in again, way to fast, and the person who is doing the pitstops just watches my car go by and my dad yells at him. I am able to make my first pit stop and then my second after that, however I lost my lead but I am able to finish ahead of Jonathan Christian in second with 10 points.
Round 2
This race went a little better, however the start of the race was not as great. The race starts out when the leader gets his car stuck in a board an inch in front of me and I cannot avoid it. I get into a pile up and I get dropped to the back of the pack. Halfway through the race, I am able to fight my way up the field, and now I’m in a three way battle for 2nd, I accidentally hit the car in front of me, and the driver behind me get by. I follow the two racers in front of me and a few laps later, they get into a Tangle and I zoom by. I then go on to place second, with ten points and a total of 20.
Round 3
This race was my best race of the day. Jonathan Christian, Gets into a little bit of a tangle at the start and get knocked back a few positions. For the rest of the race I never looked back. I race my way through lapped traffic and make the most of my pit stops. I end up taking the win in round 3 with 11 points and an overall total of 31, which is enough to help me take my first overall victory for the Ultimate F1 Winter Series. Jonathan Christian came fourth in round 3, which dropped his lead down a few points. Now I am one point behind the leader for the championship with two races to go.
Thank you for reading my race report of round 6 of the Ultimate F1 Winter Series.
I will start working on the TQ Pan Car Grand Prix.
TQ Pan Car Grand Prix, January 23 2011
After Round 6 of the Ultimate Winter F1 Series, my dad and I got ready for the TQ Pan Car Grand Prix. We just bought a car during Christmas called a “12th scale” It is a Radio Control car that is a 12th of a size of a full scale car and they use body shells that are similar to that of cars that run in the Prototype class in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The qualifiers and mains are all 8 minutes long and cars are geared to conserve battery and encourage smooth driving.
A pan car is a flat chassis that uses a link type suspension and uses more simple types of dampening, rather than the independent double wishbone suspension found on Radio Control touring cars. These cars have been gaining popularity in the Southern part of California, and have been showing up pretty frequently at TQ raceway. In this race there are two qualifiers and a main. The qualifiers are a staggered start, and the mains are a heads up, on the tone start.
Qualifier 1
I get off to a bit of a sluggish start, but once the race progresses I move my way through the field. My car is a little bit lazy in the corners, but it is smooth and easy to drive. I constantly have to move over for other racers, but in the end I am able to qualify 5th In the A main.
Qualifier 2
This race was pretty much the same as the first qualifier. My car is lazy, but is handling great, however I have to move over for faster traffic but I’m able to maintain my fifth place position in the A main.
A main
My dad made a change on my car that, made it not handle as well in the previous two qualifiers. The car was violently hooking around turning right which made it difficult to drive. On most right hand turns, I bang the car into the wall a few times however I’m able to drive the car to achieve a 6th place finish in the A main. My dad and I plan to continue to work on this car and get it better setup so it can react quicker in the corners and carry more roll speed.
Thank you for reading this race report of the TQ Pan Car Grand Prix. My next race is Round 7 of the Ultimate F1 Winter Series, at TQ raceway on February 5 2011.
Round 7 of the Ultimate F1 Winter Series is over. I won, and now I am tied with the leader on points. Next race is the final round of the Ultimate F1 Winter Series, where there will be double points scored at the event. I will begin working on the race report as soon as i get a chance.
February 5 2011, Ultimate F1 Winter Series, Round 7
A new layout on the track was laid out the week before the next round. My dad and I practiced the night before the race and set the fastest lap of the F1 class, we went home feeling good about tomorrow and the race ahead.
Qualifying.
I get off to a great start and I bust out of the gates with an 11.5 on the second lap, I get into some traffic but it does not matter, I have the pole position from the very start and I start first on the pole for the first time this season.
Round 1
The race started off pretty good for me from start to finish. I flew off the starting line, and never looked back. I got all my pit stops correct and would go on to lead the entire race. I finish first with 11 points.
Round 2
This race was a little more dramatic. I get off to a good start as usual, but Jonathan Christian hangs with me for the entire race, we both get our pit stops correct, but Jonathan still stays within striking distance of me. For the last 3 minutes and 30 seconds, Jonathan and me are only inches apart. In one corner I go a little wide and Jonathan takes me out, but he waits for me and lets me by with good sportsmanship. After that we continue to battle, but I am able to fend him off and win round two collecting 11 points with a total of 22.
Round 3.
I get off to another good start in this race however with two minutes into the race, my dad makes a miscalculation with me going into the pits. He tells me to go in, however at the last second as I come in he tell me “NO!” and Jonathan is right behind me and goes by and I have to drive out of the pits quickly without me getting my sticker. I then have to chase down Jonathan, and make up ground. I go in for my two pit stops and try to catch up. I am driving very erratically and being antsy. With 3 minutes to go, I whack a board by turning in too early, and I lose a lot of time to Jonathan. A minute later he clips the same corner that I did, and If I didn’t make that mistake I probably would of caught up to Johnithan and I would have been able to maybe pass him. Time expiries and I take second place in round 3 with 10 points with a total of 32, with me taking to overall win.
After the race, our points were added up. Jonathan and me are tied on points, however our worst race of the season has to be thrown out. Even thought my worst race was better than Jonathan’s, he now has a two-point advantage on me. Next race will be double points and the last race will determine whether Jonathan or me will take the Ultimate F1 Winter Series title. I once again thank you for reading my race report.
February 19 2011, Ultimate F1 Series, Round 8
As usual, my dad and I practiced at TQ raceway the night before the race and got the car setup well before the final round on Saturday. The morning of the race my dad and I got some practice laps in and got ready for qualifying.
Qualifying
This was a close session, Jonathan Christian (the points leader) and I duked it out for the top qualifying position, we went at it back and forth however Jonathan edges me out by 2 hundredths of a second and I will start at the front of the pack with me in tow.
I want to know talk to you about how points work in the A main in this round of the series. This is a double points race, there are 13 cars racing today, so the maximum points to be awarded in the race, if you win an A main is 13. Multiply that by two and you get 26 points. 26 points is awarded to first, 24 to second, 22 to third and so on.
Round 1
I get off to a good start right behind Jonathan, and wait for him to make a mistake, I notice that Jonathan’s car is a little loose at the start and is fishtailing. On the second lap, Jonathan gets a bit loose and I am able to get under him and pass him for the lead, I then am able to get more distance on him. I then go in for the first pit stop and Jonathan is able to get by me but I am able tot retake the lead after he goes in for his pit stop. A minute later Jonathan is able to go in for his pit stop again, and I’m able to gain some real estate on him, and then I go in for my second pit stop, and I am able to get in front of Jonathan for the lead. For the last three minutes we battle back and forth, Jonathan takes me out a few times but, he lets me by before passing me, or else he would get a stop and go penalty. On the last lap, Jonathan tries to get by me but I end up winning the first A main by only a few tenths of a second. I earn 26 points for the round and now I am tied with Jonathan for the overall championship.
Round 2.
After I did my warm up laps, I pull to the side on one part of the track, and as I wait for the racers to complete their warm up laps, I get hit from the rear end by one of the cars while taking he was taking his practice lap. This striped one of the gears on my car and my dad had to go back to the pits to replace one of the gears; the round was postponed so my dad could fix my car in time. My dad couldn’t find the right gear for my car so he had to find a gear from the hobby shop, which he did. He was able to put the gear on and get my car out on the track again for the next race.
I get off to an awesome start on the front row and start to build a gap from the rest of the pack; Jonathan makes a few mistakes, which increases my lead. I go in for my first pit stop and get out clean. Jonathan does his pit stop as well, and as I pass him while he coming out the pits, we collide and Jon gets the short end of the stick and I go by. I take my second pit stop and don’t look back for rest of the round. I go on to win with 26 points for the round, and now I am two points ahead of Jonathan for the lead.
Round 3
I must win this race in order to take the championship, or else Jonathan and me will be tied once again on points. I thought that he would beat me if we tied because I believed he had more wins than I did. It’s all come down to this, out of the 24 races in the 8 rounds of the series, It’s come down to the final round of the season…this… final main of the day. Lets do it!
I get off to a great start, and Jonathan makes quite a few mistakes two laps later. I try to build my momentum and pull away from second place. As I go in for my first pit stop, I go in a little to fast, and the pitman doesn’t get the sticker on as fast but I’m able to get ahead of Jonathan. Jonathan goes in for his stop, which gives me time to go in for my last and final pit stop of the of the round, the day, and the season. Halfway through the race, Jonathan makes more mistakes, which gives me an opportunity to take the final win. I weave my way through traffic avoiding accidents and not making any mistakes, but Jonathan is making up ground fast. With two minutes to go, Jonathan as cut my lead from a lap, to a half a lap. I still have to battle my way through lapped traffic while Jonathan is inching closer and closer to me every lap. With 20 seconds to go he’s only 2 seconds behind me now, on the final lap, Jonathan is only less than a second behind me as he tries to make his move on me, I am able to beat him to the line. I take A main #3 of the day with 26 points, with a four point advantage ahead of Jonathan, with me taking the overall championship for the 2011 Ultimate F1 Winter Series. I was so relieved and excited!
After the racing concluded, the racers who finished in the top ten got their trophies and had a group photo taken with of all the racers on the track. After that, the race director wanted to take a picture of my car and me and post it on the Ultimate F1 Winter Series website.
I found out later that if Jonathan Christian and I tied on points, I still would of won because I would have had more wins than he did. Which made me feel content.
The next day I posted the news on my Facebook page and I got a lot of comments from my friends, which made me happy and congratulated me on my victory.
Thank you for reading my race report of round 8 of the Ultimate F1 Winter Series, My next race is the KO Propo Nitro Grand Prix. More info will come on that race.
