So has anyone had success with self administering exposure therapy while enduring the agonising wait for professionally administered therapy.. What was your method?

Additionally how did you find exposure therapy once it was initiated

I had severe OCĎ when I was in my pre-teens and had to treat it myself as the counsellors my Mom had me see were useless.
To overcome it, you have to steel yourself against the compulstions; that is, you have to refuse to perform them. No matter how hard it is and how powerful the impulse, you have to refuse to perform the compulstion. And you have to keep refusing to perform it. I know how hard this is, it's like a battle. But think of the compulstion as the enemy and fight it. The more you refuse, the weaker the impluse will become.

Exposure therapy really knocked me off balance too much. It has to be enough so that you can grow past stuff, but not so much that you end up knocked out the rest of the week because you've been pushed past your acceptable level. You have to find a good therapist, and that's hard. A lot of them want to push you, when your pdoc is telling them don't. That's what I've found. It does help. But, a little goes a long way.
