We have a little institution down under that we started back when we suffered from a chronic cultural cringe that meant kiwi's din't support their own arts. NZMM successfully ended that but we have kept the tradition going. May is NZMM and so in order to do my bit here are some 'classics' from over the years that have video's on You Tube, enjoy.

PS [ this lot came off the top of my head so to speak...

Exhibit 1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7Hr6fl7zoI

Trinity Roots - Little Things.
I chose this because it is an awesome remix of an awesome song and the video shows a classic side of my country.

Exhibit 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCJg63SziL4

Fat Freddys Drop - Wandering Eye.
Another fat cut, this comes from the album 'Based on a true story.

Exhibit 3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soEjX2YD3yM

King Kapisi - Screams from the old plantation.
New Zealand has a significant Samoan population, here is a local hip-hop track from Fa Samoa.

Exhibit 4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dQ-4IV_8xo

Steriogram - White Trash.
These lads hail from where I did my growing up, great sense of humour and classic example of 'westie' self deprecation.

Exhibit 5

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHt1kI4kZos

Motocade - My Friends.
Great pop song by a great 'indie' band, a personal fave.

Exhibit 6

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CTTTX4VssU

Look Blue Go Purple - Cactus Cat.
An oldie from the Flying Nun back catalogue.

Exhibit 7

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFlPeBsDug0

Fur Patrol - Lydia.
Julia Deans has a fantastic voice and this is an exceptionaly good song [IMO].

Exhibit 8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWE-oZhKBes

The Scavengers - Mysterex.
Back in the early eighties we had an Auckland radio DJ who was our John Peel, his name was Barry Jenkins and his Technics New Music show was the only place to hear anything outside the mainstream, he called for local bands to supply demos and he actually played them! An album AK79 came from these tapes, this song was on that album. The Scavengers moved to Melbourne and became 'the marching girls', they re-recorded a catchy little pop song called 'true love' [the origional also on AK79] which appeared in cult movie 'Dog's in Space' [the everyone sing along scene before it all turns bad].

Exhibit 9

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHE0xQ7NgM0

Blam Blam Blam - Don't Fight It Marsha [it's bigger than both of us]
Another oldie, the Don McGlashin story is too long to write here... [From Scratch, The Front Lawn, The Mutton Birds].

Lastly...

Exhibit 10

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DfJc0Une5g

Tall Dwarves - Nothings Going To Happen
Tall Dwarves Chris Knox is without a doubt one of the most influential people in NZ alternative music, recently he had a stroke and is slowly recovering, an album to raise funds to help his family 'Stroke' featuring covers of his songs by artists from all over the world is in existence, Kia Kaha Chris! This one is off the first Tall Dwarves EP

Enjoy, peace j

I absolutely LOVE NZ, and was blown away by their music industry when I was there. Left with about 10-20 new albums!

Kora's awesome Intro+Burning

Fat Freddy's Drop - Hope
I found this on vinyl... what a brilliant song.

Sola Rosa - Don't Leave Home
Probably my favourite NZ discovery, just brilliant listen-any-time music.

Rhian Sheehan - An Afternoon on the Moon
Perennial favourite, how could you not like it.

Bongmaster - Ground My Ego
Featuring members from Fat Freddy's Drop, what can go wrong?

Pacific Heights - In a Quiet Storm
Can't end with something more perfect than this.

Love NZ music!!

Thanks, I knew I would be out of date for the most part and wanted to give a broad sample.

Where are you from Nebulo? [if you don't mind my asking]

Also if you like our roots/dub styles check out 'The Yoots - sing along with the Yoots' They have taken classic Maori songs and given them a predominantly old school ska treatment with one or two other styles thrown in - wicked draw fe true! Bandleader is Fat Freddies trombonist and band is made up of total local stars.

One more while I'm here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyjVGlQdt2k
The Skepics - AFFCO

This one caused a real upset in this provincial wee land with it's agrarian ecconomic roots.

I may add more yet though whether people are just watching but not commenting or whether this thread is going ignored I know not, if you watch perhaps you could comment, it may influence my further choices [if there are any?]

NZ has a lot of talented musicians. I've visited many countries and I had never seen so many musicians performing on the streets with such professionalism.

Wellington alone ..wow.. from cuba street to the museum on some sundays there would be people playing guitars, violins, solo vocals, flutes... an incredible array of classic and modern music. I even asked some of them if they were hired by the city to perform because it was all so amazing (they said no it was on their own that they were there).

On behalf of them all, thankyou, however I doubt we are any more talented than anywhere else, the area you describe is just where the buskers choose to work
