Does a Man really have to go out and by $150 Jeans etc?
It is ludicrous. I went into a shop in Chicago once that sold jeans for as much as $300 a pair. I tried a pair on just to see what $300 denim feels like around my butt. They are like custom fit, they dont just have waste size/leg length, but like 5 other measurments they take and carry sizes in to get the 'perfect' fitting pair of pants.
They just felt no different than the pair of Levi jeans you can get on sale anywhere for 2 for $60. And I bet my levi jeans will last for a 100 more wears than those $300 ones.
I do over spend on nicer clothes, dress pants and khakis and jackets. I have found that a $100 pair of khakis do fit and feel better made than the $30 or $40 pair you get at Target or JCPennies. So I will splurge on those, but I rarely wear anything but jeans, so the maybe 3 or 4 pairs of khaki pants I own i've bought over the last like 4 years.
I do have a few jackets that cost me an arm and a leg. They do fit better than what your run of the mill bargain suit store sells for $100-200. The few times a year I do need to get dressed up it feels good to be wearing something real nice though.
I pay $4-6 for used jeans that look new. I'm not middle class though. I'm on SSDI. But, I have bought Gloria Vanderbilt's for that price at thrift stores.

Don't take life so seriously. It isn't permanent!
what does this have to do with love and dating?
I'm not a man, but I don't buy expensive clothes because I look down on cheaper clothes.
I buy expensive clothes every now and then 'cause it's what fits me best.
With a lot of the cheaper clothes (e.g. H&M as someone mentioned earlier), not a lot of thought is put in the fit/flow of it. It's just a standard model that's used over and over and over and usually it's only the skinny flat chested girls that get to wear it and look good in it.
I have a hell of a hard time looking for jeans (and t-shirts etc. btw) that actually fit me, in the end i had to opt for men's jeans (which I'm ttly cool with, as long as it fits and looks okay). But the jeans that finally did fit me cost like 125 euro.
Which is a bit of a steep price, but seeing that I'll be enjoying my jeans for years on end, I don't think it's that much to pay.
You DON'T HAVE to buy expensive jeans etc., you buy what you like. But if you happen to find something that's a bit more expensive, but it makes you look/feel really good and if you know you'll enjoy it for a long time... if it's in your budget, I'd say go for it.
Another thing is just the feeling. A cotton shirt from H&M usually feels like it's made from a piece of sailor-sack hemp which has first been heavily starched. It feels like wearing a lego cube rather than a shirt. A simple cotton shirt from Gucci on the other hand feels like silk, has a perfect fit and fall over the body and looks soft and natural when you move. It feels like wearing clothing made in heaven.
You only notice this difference in quality if you have ever tried really high-end stuff. Once you have, you start realizing just how cheap H&M feels in comparison. Even the in-between stuff, which is considered pricy and maybe even luxury to many middle-class people, feels cheap compared to the high-end clothes. In-between is usually the WORST alternative when considering price VS quality.
For example, a pair of middle of the line shoes, for $100, are usually made with as cheap mass producing factory techniques as H&M shoes for $30, and will usually just look more cheap since it's an obvious (failed) attempt at looking "luxurious". Without being racist, in Europe you usually see immigrants who wants to look classy wearing stuff like this. It usually has italian, french or classic british sounding names which has nothing to do with real quality clothing or any traditional brand, like for example "Bianco" (very cheap), "Batistini", "Emilio" or "Gabba". It's all very, very cheap marketing of extremely cheap products. If the choice is between a mid-line and a budget H&M, I still say H&M is better and will make the bearer look more respectable than "Bianco" or whatever.
However, if you can afford a pair of handmade shoes for $500-600, you will have the best quality and it will also look the best. It will look as expensive as it is and for a trained eye will never be mistaken for middle of the road fake luxury for $100. For me, in-between products are a TOTAL waste. It's a way to fool the middle-class. It's not an investment in quality or style. Either you go for H&M or you go for Yves Saint Laurent, there really is no middle road as far as I'm concerned.
Of course, there is yet another category of good quality products in a middle pricerange. These are usually more basic stuff and it's made to be used, worn, washed etc a lot but with the best materials and techniques. It's still somewhere between middle-end and high-end stuff in terms of price.
There is a japanese equivalent to H&M called Uniqlo which, unlike H&M, actually have a certain amount of quality for low prices. The best budget brand in the world is definitely Uniqlo. It's better quality than in-between products but actually cheaper than most of those in terms of price. I highly recommend it.
Wealth and "conspicuous consumption" are used by the wealthy to identify themselves to each other and attract potential wealthy mates. Designer brands can be like a secret handshake that only those conscious of such things will quickly notice.
So, to answer, YES! I would unequivocally, absolutely spend $150 or much more on an item of designer apparel if I were interested in attracting other wealthy members of the opposite sex.
It all depends on what it is worth to YOU. And whether or not you can afford it.
If you really need the 'right' clothes, 'right' accessories,'right' gadgets etc to impress your peers and fit in then unfortunately that is your problem.
Yes, people will judge you on what you are wearing but how important are those people really?
Real friends are not really bothered about what you wear. Though they will hopefully warn you if you have put on something really dreadful

I am sure that every NT believes that; however, I believe that aspies bad luck in the NT world is down to lack of superficial qualities not noble ones. I encourage being a little more superficial while blatantly denying it.
While we are on the subject of expensive jeans, it so happens that I have a pear of premier-de-quality selling on ebay starting at £25. Very rare you cant buy these jeans easily in the shops. Check out the 6 phoots.

I agree that aspies would be more succesful in certain social situations, like dating, if they didn't deny the importance of superficial traits and vanity. It's important to look good and do anything to look as good as possible. That includes living healthy, working out, cosmetic improvements and clothing.
Why do so many aspies deny these things are important but yet whine that people see them as repulsive.
A socially unskilled aspie who looks like s**t will be treated badly. A socially unskilled aspie who looks better than the average NT will have his lack of social skills seen as a cute and quirky trait, almost attractive in many cases.
Superficial handicap is actually the biggest reason why aspies can't date. Ugly NT's, believe it or not, ALSO have that problem. The ugly NT's who do get in relationships have some very special talents like incredible sense of humour, are wealthy or meet partners who have some sort of personality disorder (borderlinish etc) who are drawn to them more for being a bad guy than for their looks, as an example.
Yeah I agree. I did spend $130 on jeans once (that was in Bloomingdales in NYC) but I was on holiday and it was now or never so I chose to buy them, very nice jeans they are.
But I tend to spend around $50-$60. (I mainly only buy jeans on holiday in the US) but I do sometimes buy jeans for like £3 to use a few times before they wear and tear away.

Well, I did say "Real friends".
Sure it helps to fit in with the guys at work etc but if they give you too much stick then they are not really your friends.
Sure if you are going on a date you want to give a good impression.
What you wear presents an image of you to the world. You do need to be aware of whether the image you present is the one you want to present.
Your jeans need to be clean, not crumpled, fit and not be too unfashionable.
But they really don't need to cost $150.
If you can easily afford it then fine. But if you present the image of someone who spends a lot of money then you will attract people who expect to you to keep spending.
Wearing the right clothes can give some people a confidence boost i.e. make them feel the part and make it easier to act the part.
In that case getting the right clothes can be an investment. Especially getting the right suit for a job interview.
