I know women (and a few men) whose main friends are their friends with benefits. That's a sort of harem.

You are missing the point; some people want sex with no relationship. Well a sex only relationship. lol 
I'd take a harem of men, but they all have to love me and protect me. And not kill each other.

The bolded part is the only reason that I do not have a harem IRL right now, for the first time ever.
I have a bunch bothering me at the moment, and now I must choose to have a harem, date them all (until I find one I can trust) or to date none of them.
The harem option is only not possible because they all extremely protective, jealous, possessive, territorial and competitive bast*rds (I have a habit of attracting these ones) - and also, because I am a terrible liar.
They would probably kill each other if I did take that route.
