People who can not afford it will find ways to get what they want. Life is all about survival. The law does not matter when you are starving and have nothing to lose. Anyway if you get put in prison you get three meals a day and a bed to sleep in.

Or a melted-plastic knife between the ribs, depending on how well you can adapt to the social situation.

It's simple, I live my life like John Galt. I don't live my life for the sake of another man, nor expect them to live for my sake. I live for myself, it's a pure and liberating thought.

By this line of reasoning, then, should the 'mentally disabled' be provided any assistance or accomodation whatsoever, when there are plenty of 'mentally normal' people who can serve their function in society just fine?

Well I would say so.

Then go out into the wild wrap yourself in fig leaves and pick berries and hunt rodents. Don't even think about using tax-payer funded roads.

I thought of a better response....

If what you say is true then I guess I don't owe the world anything either.

^ Damn, you beat me to it. :P

But this rock has given us protection from the dangers in the vacuum of space. I think we do owe the world something in return. How about we stop trying to kill it with greenhouse gasses?

I take exception to your list just with these two items. I think parents actually do owe their kids food and shelter, a debt they assume simply by having the kids. (I am a parent, for the record, so I am not grumbling about my own parents but stating what I owe my daughter for having her as all parents owe their children.) However, that debt ends when childhood ends, something that many young adults don't realize and think their parents owe them support literally for life.

In quite a lot of societies, once the child becomes an adult and the parent becomes an elderly person unable to care for themselves (if that happens) the debt is reversed.

But I think the parent owing the child (too young to care for himself) and the child owing the parent (too old to care for himself) are the only actual debts.

If parents owe their children support up to adulthood simply for having them then when those children reach adulthood the debt is paid. The reversal of a paid debt is nonsensical. Caring for one's elderly parents is altruistic, following your logic.

In my case and in other cases where parents extend support for their children into adulthood, however, a new debt is formed. Which then leads to caring for one's elderly parents as payment.

That's my take on it anyway.

I enjoyed answering that question.

You enjoy that people who struggle to get their needs met and live the life they would like would die if they did not receive some amount of assistance with some of those things?

now the world owes me $67,514.85, and i am becoming disgruntled.
i must get the payments owed to me by whatever means i can think of.
i am becoming agitated at the tardiness of people addressing their bills.

i would be so happy if the world owed me nothing.
but at present, it owes me $67,514.85.

This thread is so unfocused it has lead to some rather ugly posts.
I fail to see the relevance of all this to "Social Skills and Making Friends"

It has certainly drifted from its original goals, yes.

The original thought came from what I thought was a rather telling statement from elsewhere:

"The world doesn't owe you 'friends', so stop expecting anyone to give a s**t about you."

It eventually evolved into the thread-as-presented.

I might dispute, however, that the 'unfocused nature' of the original statement is responsible for the 'ugly posts'; I think people are capable of ugliness regardless of the provocation.
