People giving disorders bad definitions....

What worries me is that in those cases it looks like its specifically their aspie traits that made them like that, for instance if an AS man was addicted to drugs or gambling id think "well thats just human, anyone can get that" but if its their aspie traits, like always doing their hobby instead of showing care, that worries me. It makes me think aspies will never get understanding.

The problem with trying to raise awareness through comparison to TV characters is the same problem faced by any other disability: An "hour-long" drama has 44-48 minutes (depending on the number of commercials) to establish characters and tell a story. They use stereotypes as a shortcut in the storytelling process.

Of course, if you can establish the character as a main character on the show, you have time to develop understanding of him/her (and then you have The Big Bang Theory, Det. Goren on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, or Temperance Brennan on Bones...).

I love detective Goren. I feel disappointed when he's not in one of the Law & Order episodes.

Speaking of, there was a 2 minute, or so, appearance of an autistic character last night in the Law & Order SVU. Very Rain Man like, but was a [/i]little[i] bit better of a representation.

It's more accurate to say some people aren't good marriage partners regardless of their type unless they are willing to change.

In Britain, the welfare system uses progressive attitudes towards AS/Autism as an excuse to avoid giving us the support we need. As long as you can tie your shoelaces, cook a meal, catch a bus and do your shopping, you should have no problems finding employment. In the words of my former doctor: "If you can write, you can hold a shovel."

Ah, but just as here in America, just because you CAN and WANT to work doesn't mean anyone would touch you with a 10-foot pole.

Tell me about it. I was stuck on unemployment benefit for four years. I was forced to apply for jobs that I was both unsuited to and had no chance of getting. Fortunately, the ensuing mental problems got me on income support and things have been rosy ever since.
