has anyone else had a similar experience?

at school i was always drawing surreal cartoons, daydreaming and writing weird songs- i was the weird punk rock/alternative kid. i was always rubbish at maths/science/computers/sitting still for more than 10 seconds etc.

my teachers saw me as a failure- they put me in these awful remedial classes, they basically saw me as lazy and stupid because i couldn't do algebra and didn't pay attention in science class. they ignored my strengths and killed my self esteem.

now i'm at university studying visual arts! i play in bands, i write songs and so forth! people actually LIKE me! ironically, the very things that made me an outcast 5 years ago are now the reasons why people find me interesting!

Aspergers has paid off in some ways :)

hehe, way to go, talking about payday! :D

I do have similuar experience as my strongest part is art as well. I was sent off to a special maths class for "stupids who dont understand it" (as how I felt it)
No wonder that you felt school was worthless when you was forced into a lot of stuff you constantly had to struggle with

I cant go to University though but I have proved my artskills in other ways. Im glad people do like you and that your progress in what you do is going well and successful so far!
What kind of music do you play and write? Whats your instrument?

I was like this, except I was put into gifted and talented classes instead of remedial classes...Around here though, the GT classes are sorta like "special ed" for smart kids who learned differently, so I got some leeway in those classes.

I was not in college for very long. I had had enough of school by then and I couldn't get any financial assistance, so I sort quit after a couple of years.
I did start singing in a band when I was 15 though.
I managed to have a few friends in High School..other creative oddballs...In college, the only people who would have anything to do with me were the students who didn't speak English that I tutored for free.
