It's great to see that everybody's responding the way I was hoping when I figured I should start a topic like this!

Sometimes I find it weird that I qualify for Asperger's on every single level, but the only category I don't seem to fall under is 'literal humor'. Like Sam I am very deadpan sarcastic. There is one person in my life who knows when I'm joking or not, but for the most part everybody just seems to think I am telling the truth. And I hardly ever am. One example of this is that I usually paint crazy pictures of my mother being the weirdest person on the planet, which she knows I do and enjoys, and everyone always goes "Wow, your mom is NORMAL! Never thought of her that way."

I think sarcasm is great, yet when other's do it with me I get confused. Does anyone have that? Like it's a one way street for you?

Also: does anyone think there is any correlation between Asperger's / being able to quickly categorize things in your memory and mind and being sarcastic? I've been thinking about this.

I don't understand a thing about sarcasm but i'm getting there.... When people say something sarcastic, sometimes I take it quite literally back in the days.

I'm better now at understanding it... :) Even though I do it all the time and half the times I don't even know it.

I love sarcasm, I use it all the time. Though I'm not very good at it (or too good, depending on how you look at it) because I often have to reassure people that what I just said was in jest.

I probably understand it... as long as I think twice about it....

I guess when people first meet me, they can't tell if I'm being sarcastic or not. It's kind of weird, people quickly figure it out though. I think because, almost everything I say is sarcastic. I agree with the one who said he has to be the funniest person in the world. I feel that way too. I feel it's my only way to really connect with people is to make them laugh. Otherwise, I have no idea what they're feeling or thinking. A lot of times I'll get myself in trouble by trying to make someone laugh who's in a bad mood, and just want me to go away.

The problem is that I do this online too, where intonation is nonexistant and I have to rely on people's ability to interpret my intended message based on very little information. Since I often forget to add a little <sarcasm></sarcasm> line.

Like many here, I can be very sarcastic and deadpan, and sometimes people don't realize I'm being sarcastic. Sometimes, when others around me make sarcastic statements, I pretend to take it at face value, and this really throws them off. (I'm ususally laughing hysterically on the inside.) However, I still do sometimes have a hard time recognizing sarcasm in others, so when I miss it at first, I then pretend to have known along, and to have been doing my deadpan-play-along thing.
I have a feeling that the paradox of sarcastic Aspies could be explained by the fact that sarcasm is an exact inversion of literal thinking. If you get the hang of it, you just say the opposite of what you think, and people think you're funny. Other sorts of humor, like slapstick physical comedy, or embarassing situations, probably hit too close to home.

Are people supposed to yell at you after though?

"oh get stuffed shanti"
"why would you say that?"
"that's really mean."

Mind you these people laugh every time they mention autism, and have called me ret*d in the past.

I get the same thing, a lot. I think when I say something that seems obvious to me, it is not obvious to others.

My three-year-old son (currently being evaluated for AS) recently used sarcasm for the first time, which I didn't even think was possible at that age. (He told me very seriously that he sees me all the time me with his laser eyes, and then he laughed and laughed. I think he was calling me out on my bogus claims of having special mom powers.) His NT big sister doesn't even understand sarcasm quite yet. However, everyone on my mom's side of the family (the side that has rampant spectrum traits) has a very dry wit and they are all very much into sarcastic humor and wordplay (which people outside the family don't generally "get" or appreciate as much as we do). I often kid people with a very deadpan delivery and nobody realizes I'm kidding until I tell them. I think it's because I don't use the proper inflection and facial expressions to convey that I'm kidding. My humor comes along much better on paper, because I can hone the delivery.
